I have timed my JD by the directions I got off this page. It's a 1944 B. with the magneedle turned all the way forward, It impulses at TDC. I can't retard the timing at all as there is no adjustment left. It is a hand start, and I feel if I could adjust it slightly to retard it would run a bit better. I have 45lbs pressure on each cylinder and am using Champion D-16 spark plugs. I still seem to create a lot of soot. The carb was completely rebuilt too.

I am not the smartest one to answser this question but have ran into the same issue on my 44B. One thing to check is to take the mag off and look at the back side where there is several little timing marks. I think you want to be 2 1/2 marks left of the center mark to ensure the lag timing is right. That will effect the mag when it hits as you turn the flywheel by hand. Once the tractor starts up, that mag will change to it's running timing so it might be trying to fool you by being in time at hand crank but way late after it starts. Another thing, I have had nothing but bad luck with champion plugs in my tractor and was told to get autolite 386 or 388's and you know it fixed that fouling problem right away. If that doesn't do it all, then you have probably some carb problems to work on. Start with this first and if you get in more trouble, go to the John deere site and ask for clooney, John T or one of the other very helpful and brilliant guys there.
