There is a lot of slop in the steering on my IH 140 Hi-Clear. I don't find any external adjustments on the steering gear. Do I have to take it all apart to adjust it?

Maybe worn keyway slots inside gearbox

JMS/MN is correct, but if that does not fix the problem, on that particular tractor you will have to replace the gears in the front bolster. Post on the Farmall board for more detailed answers. There is no adjustment.

Not real familiar with your tractor model, but generally check for worn bushings, tie rod ends, bearings, etc. Also worn pins and crosses in steering u-joints. Jack up the front of the tractor to get the weight off, and wear spots are easier to find. Generally gear box problems are infrequent. With AC like WD, you can get wobble from worn tapered bearings in the pedestal but there are plenty of other wear spots in the system that go first.
