I have a massey fergusen 135, 1973 Perkins 3 cylinder gas. I have had this tractor for a couple of months and have had great service out of it. It is stored on a farm we have in Tennessee and the last time I went to use it. (It had been sitting about 3 weeks), it started right up but when I pulled out of barn, engine started backfiring and throttle will not increase rpms. I checked linkage on governor and removed and hand operated governor and for a minute engine picked up and ran smoothly and then started the backfire again. And manually operating the governor or butterfly on carburetor had no effect. I did not take carburetor apart or governor and have not checked plugs yet (they are under gas tank. I did check fuel bowl and cleaned and checked fuel line and is flowing. Being a new owner and a novice repair person what are some of the possible causes and what should I check out first. Any info is appreciated.

Thanks
rick

I agree with all the above,
A note my Massey 135 drove me crazy for several years in the late spring with what absolutely appeared to be a occasional coil fault.]

It turns out the gas goes stale and gums up above the filter screen on the fuel bowl. Even though fuel flows out it is not sufficent above an idle to run right. A paperclip slid up into tank cleans it and STABIL in the tank when the tractor sits more than a month prevents its

Suggestion do a Yahoo search for Big Dean MF135 for a great site on this tractor

Please let us know the outcome

Rick,

I recently purchased a '55 TO-35 Deluxe (12V, gas)and it demonstrated some of the symptoms you explained regarding your tractor, particularly the intermittent backfiring. Bottom line, the tractor is not backfiring any longer. While troubleshooting, we replaced the points, plugs, plug wires, condenser, and battery. This all started because of a loose connection on the starter. The simple act of tightening a nut led to one discovery after another. Since all of this has taken place within the last two weeks its too early for me to say with complete confidence that all problems are resolved. The backfire is gone however and I'm glad for my neighbors were entertained by the small-arms range sound my tractor made when it was operating. Hope this helps.

Jim

It seeems maybe that it is running lean for some reason. In my experience i wouldn't suspect the governor but i could be wrong. I would look probably into the engine not gettting the right fuel or something electrical. I wouldn't hesitate to look and the cap and rotor ,points. Once I had troubles with a friends MF 135 where the wire leading to the points was loose making the tractor not want to start although yours is starting. Just a few things to look at, good luck in your findings. I would be interested to here what you find. I hope I gave you some help.
