Folks, the 16 HP Kohler Engine on my Wheel Horse C160 died and I swapped in a 12 HP Kohler. It starts right up and runs great when I jump the battery (battery is shot) but accoring to the AMP gauge, it's discharging and after running for a while it dies. I'm assuming that since it's not charging the battery drains and the engine dies. So, is the problem the stator in the 12 hp engine? or is it the rectifier which is the original one for the 16 HP ? How can I tell? Any ideas are appreciated! Thanks - Jim.

Jim, the Kohler rectifier requires a battery with at least 5V [about don't have the book handy] to activate. When the jumping battery is removed the voltage drops below the required. Take the jumping batter and leave it connected and the ampmeter should show a charge. Make sure the cooling fins on the rectifier are inside the air shroud or it will fail due to overheating. A good battery is needed to operate properly. Good luck Jake

Thanks Jake, I'll double check the battery but I don't think that is the problem as I used a different battery which I "think" was OK. And if I'm not mistaken, the amps gauge was still discharging even when the jumper cables were still attached from my running truck.

Jim, check the voltage on the regulator. When running the 2 outside terminals should read 25V AC, the center terminal should show 13.5 V DC when charging [reading from terminal to gnd]. The stators are the same on 10-16 hp Kohlers with the 15 amp rectifier. The 25 AC is generated by the flywheel magnet passing over the stator coils and the 2 wires are connected in series to all the coils. Good luck again Jake

Folks, someone told me that the stator, flywheel and rectifier were a "matched set" so I swapped all these parts from the 16HP kohler to the 12 HP kohler. Started right up and was charging fine. I think the stator in the 12 HP was bad and when I swapped just the stator in from the 16 it was no go, I needed the flywheel too. I'm back in Business! Thanks for your help. - Jim
