I need a welder. I'm thinking about one made by Thermadyne. The model is called the Scout TA/170-H. It is one with a 9hp Honda engine so it is portable. Three things, is only DC, only rated at 170 amps, $1500.

I plan on building a few implements, a trailer, etc.

Thanks for your feed back.

Turn your tractor, or your truck, or an old riding mower into a mobile welder. Install a ZENA welding system. Costs a lot less and welds great.

Don't know about the thermodyne unit, but had an Esab 180 (180 amps max at 10% duty cycle, with a Wisconsin Robin engine that would wake the dead!) and it did everything I needed around the house. Would burn 3/16" rod for a short time at a stretch ( went through the best part of a 50# box of 3/32" LoHy without a break while putting together a trailer without smoking the welder too). Bought a Lincoln Weldnpower 250 D from the welder at that four letter place (work) when he got his new machine. If your going to be working long stretches at a time without a break to let the machine cool, you may want to consider a bigger unit. Maybe you can find a pro welder that will sell you his/her old machine at a good price (that's why I've got the machine I've got, Milan made me an offer I'd have been crazy to walk away from).
