Water is fond on Mars. How about finding some here in California. Is all all the money we are spending to explore the heavens is really worth it? At least I don't think so. We made it to the moon, now lets stop. Stan

Its a man made crisis in California. Reservoirs are being pumped dry to ensure river flow for fish that are not even native to the ecosystem. Over 50% of the water in California is being used for ecology purposes while fields are allowed to wither and die from lack of water. While the population of California doubled not a single major water infrastructure project has been built to deal with it in 50 years.

Ive got to disagree as well. The moon shot was really about demonstrating to the USSR and refining the technology for ballistic missile targeting. If you can hit the orbit of the moon with an earth launched rocket you can certainly hit a fixed location piece of real estate. .... Now Mars, and beyond.... that to me is the future. There are 7 billion of us on this little hunk of rock. Limited resources, be that water, fuel, air, food, whatever. Since we are apparently going to keep breeding we must look to the stars. After all, this is the only house we have right now. Mars is, to me, the first step.

For the real story about mars, go to James Mc Canney science.

Got to disagree with you Stan. The technology that was created and advanced outweighs the cost in itself.
That and just the plain pure wonder of advancing our knowledge of what is out there way more than pays for it in my book.
This boy from a farm in Wisconsin would probably still be scratching in the dirt(not that that is all a bad thing...) if it had not been for the space program making him look up and wonder!

Also, we need to be building water treatment plants and put some back in the ground as more and more is being pumped out.

I got a kick at the professional "Water On Mars" guy kept on referring to it as not only water, but LIQUID water. That's the good kind.

They've known for many years that there is water ice on Mars. He said "liquid water" to indicate the state in which it exists.

Changing our system of municipal wastewater treatment would save a huge amount of water as well. In rural areas the water left over from the waste is perked back into the ground.
In municipal systems the water is pumped from the ground to carry the waste to a treatment plant. The treatment plant removes the waste, then dumps the water into the nearest river, which carries it to the ocean. It may be oversimplification, but we are basically pumping billions of gallons of water a day out of the ground, and dumping it in the ocean Pete

I do not believe a word of it. IF we are to deal with life outside of Earth, the Bible would have told us something about it. Earth is our home, and where we are to put our efforts and assets. I did and still will support Star Wars type defensive satellite technology to protect us (laser beams that can detect and kill nukes after launch etc) and if our space program can help develop this then okay. I tend to think we already have some of this in place, top secret of course. That is my 2 cents so far.

The exploration of our solar system and beyond is a very small price to pay to quench our curiosity. And we are curious. CA's water issue is a population and poor conservation effort. Look up Kesterson Wild Life Preserve. Jim

All kinds of water in the ocean you just need to desalinize it. Big big expense though and your state has as many stupid politicians as ours. I hate to be the guy that says this but technology has run ahead of common sense and decency for human beings. Do we want to push so we have 5 billion more human beings in the next 30 to 50 years? We already consider life as being cheap when it comes to the economy so I would hate to push things further out of balance. No easy answer I'll admit.

Desalting technology MUST be developed and is the answer to the all Earth water problems that are coming and we should be putting big money into it NOW. Another technology that needs support and funding is emissions cleaning, i.e., scrubbers that clean emissions before release. We have some now but too expensive and still inefficient. I believe all answers to all human problems exist in the human mind already, we just have to put those many great minds together toward the right goals.
