Recently when i tried to start my diesel tractor, engine would crank and large amouts of smoke came out tailpipe but would not start. It tried to start but would not continue to run. Does anyone know what the problem might be?

I agree, it sounds like a cold engine, but some of those Kubota engines, at least some of the construction applications, had a magnetic switch-plunger on the side of the pump to either add excess fuel for cold start, or an external magnetic switch-plunger-link mechanism to advance or retard timing for cold starting. Maybe the ag engines didn't use these, but I saw a Construction supervisor order up an o/h on a 4 cyl Kubota that wouldn't start, when all that was wrong was one of those magnetic switches wasn't pulling on the cold starting aid. My experience.

Sounds like you are not using the glowplugs properly or the glowplugs themselves are not working properly. If you are getting smoke, you are PROBABLY getting adequate fuel delivery. For DJN; of course the smoke is due to a cold engine, it hasn't started and warmed up yet! This is normal at startup, or while cranking before startup, particularly in cold weather.

How do you test Glo plugs on International Harvestor Model b275 tractors? Or ways to make Glo Plugs work on a different system, because some of the components on instrument panel are broke and gone. We heard starting the engines with gas rags and Ether may cause engine damage. Please email any information as soon as possible.

use meter, volt scale, or light bulb, one lead ground other on glow plug, with glow plug on should read battery voltage. if not check for wire, switch, or relay, somtimes a pre resistor problem, with switch off -then remove wires from glow plug and ohm out since it is just a heater coil would be low ohms 1 to 2 ohms, if if you have no meter use test light, (hook light bulb to battery --cut wire like ya were gonna put a switch in wire use these wire as test leads for yer homeade test lamp) just as switch has continuity yer glow plug should, but check continuity indvidualy. i have also pulled an injector to check its flow good spray, hooked up out of engine and watched glow plugs to see how long it took to get full heat as they are different some 3seconds some 8 sec & mine 30seconds (these are general test not specific to model or type of tractor)

Hi Jay,
A suggestion you may want to consider regards how you store your fuel.
I buy 50 gallons of off-road diesel at the time and store it in a 55 gal drum under the shed. This quantity will last me about two months in summer and longer in winter. I was concerned about moisture and trash in the fuel. I have a hand crank pump with long hose that mounts in the bung hole. I bought an in-line adapter that accepts a spin-on fuel filter from the Amoco dealer. The filter has a drain cock on the bottom to dispose of any water. So far, I haven't had any problems. Good luck.

If you use a starting fluid of any kind, you will be doing harm to your engine! The charge of fuel goes off out of time with the crank timing, this hammers your engine and usually breaks the ring lands. Bleed the system, check the perheat system and while you crank it,listen carefully for even cranking. If it lopes, you may have a compression problem. good luck, Mike

Any chance the fuel is old, is dirty, has condensation or bacteria in it plugging the filters. Some #2 diesel blends will wax the fuel filters solid at freezing temps. Is this a sudden problem or has been gradualy worsening?

TRACTOR USUALLY HAS BEEN STARTING ALTHOUGH LARGE AMOUNTS OF SMOKE HAVE BEEEN COMING OUT TAIPIPE. THE LAST TIME, SEVERAL DAYS AGO, IS WHEN IT DIED AND I COULD NOT GET IT STARTED OR IF IT DID START IT WOULD RUN A FEW SECONDS AND DIE.

If smoke is a very light grey or white that would indicate low compretion or cold engine.Try pluging in if it has a block heater & see if that makes a diferance.Air in the fule system can also cause hard starting if it starts & runs rough right at first it cuold have an air leak in one of the inlet fitings.

If you don't have glow plugs or a water heater or block heater, you can get one of those oil dipstick heaters(they work okay) or get ya a can of ehter(starting fluid).use as little is needed. Or, check batteries, ones that are about through won't crank very fast when it gets a little cold.

If you don't have an auto bleed system and you run out of fuel, you will have to bleed the air out of the lines. What make/model is your diesel?

How cold is it where you are? When mine does that, I hit the pre-heat for about 10 seconds, and she takes right off.

Not real cold, sometimes in the mid 30's. This usually occurs after I have not run tractor for about a week or two. It had been starting until last week, although it smoked a lot at first, but usually cleared up after it had been running awhile. This time I thought I was out of fuel and put more fuel in, but still would not start. It might be fuel filter since I have not checked it yet. Tractor is up at ranch. Thanks for your reply.

Hey Jay, I'll put my .02 cents in, you say its a Kubota so I'm gonna assume its a 3 cylinder and you say it had been starting up until this time however with alot of smoke, so I'm gonna say its a leaking injector, what happens is over time (usually overnight) the bad injector will leak fuel into the cylinder when not running so when you go to start it, it turns over but theres so much fuel in that cylinder it cant burn it not to mention the injector is putting more in there when cranking so you get smoke from where its trying to burn the fuel, eventually when it does start it will smoke for a while until you get that cylinder cleared up. Heres something to try if it has a manual shutoff, like a knob to pull to shut the engine off, pull it out and crank the engine for oh say 10 seconds and give it a chance to expel all that excess fuel then try starting it or if it shuts off with the key find the electrical shut down solenoid and disconnect it and do the same thing. And also some of the other guys talked about the preheaters make sure they are working and use them I work on Bobcats alot that have Kubotas in them if its below about 50 degrees you have to preheat them first time you start them to get them to crank without any problems.

adding fuel to tractor that has already run won't help much of any thing. If thats the case your gonna have to bleed the sytem of air cought in the lines. The easiest way to do this is to crack open the fuel lines at the injectors, crank over the engine until all the air or bubbles are out of the line, It helps if you have a strong battery.

But it sounds more like your trying to start a cold tractor.
