I know this isn't about tractors but I am sure that someone here will know. What is the horsepower of a Chevy 350 V8 motor that has had nothing done to it. The one I have is in a '79 model truck. Thanks for the info.

Jeff

If rebuilding it a matched set of Eldenbrock aluminium heads, intake manifold, cam & headers will increase the power into the high 200's or low 300's and burn less fuel than the factory emmision set-up. Parts are dirt cheap too. The factory head/cam/manifolds of that era were pretty grim.

I have the literature for 1979 Chevy pickups. The 350 SAE NET HORSEPOWER was 165 @ 3600 rpm The SAE NET TORQUE (LB-FT) was 270 @ 2000 rpm I has a 4.0'' bore and 3.5'' stroke. Compression Ratio 8.2 to 1

a 350 2bbl stock puts out 140 hp, 4bbl about 165
roughly the same as a 302 Ford. Chevys dont breathe well stock at all. Fords are ususally most powerful with stock parts.

They don't breathe well because the cam was built with a delayed opening on the exhaust valve, to make them run hotter and burn more gas ( pollution crap- you know. No one will ever convince me that you can make an engine so that it burns 50% more fuel than it should, and be putting out lets pollutants. Anyway all you got to do is put a cam in it out of an older one or a standard jobber one and watch it fly. Then you'll get 175 with a 2bl.

Totally agree with the more fuel supposedly less polution theory . BULL
Get a cam: dual patern , means more exhaust duration than intake , lots of good aftermarket ones out there , with a duration of 265 to 270 degrees , you won't know its the same truck .
Another thing you can do is change heads to the older heavier heads from the early '70s . Two good casting numbers are 487 or 993 , that's the last three digits of the casting nos on top of the head , they have 1.94 intake and 1.50 exhaust valves . They have bigger valves than your newer heads , they breath better and cool better also are a few pounds heavier and way more resistant to cracking from overheating . If you ever rebuild the engine put flat top pistons in , that will raise your compression to upper 8's and give you more power .
I have done this to several 350's in the past and you won't know it is the same engine . Have two 4x4 pickups setup like that now . I use late 60's stock intakes and q-jet carbs from same time , I know everybody hates q-jet carbs but I've had good luck with them. If you have any questions post or email me I'll be glad to help . I have a chevy 350 motor that I would like to get a little more horsepower out of it, So what can I do on a little budget. It has been dyno at 195 hp. Can I take off the old Q-jet carb and intake and put on an aftermarket intake and carb. combo to get more horsepower or what.

I would have to disagree with that. Ford heads stock don't flow good. If you look at cams for fords you will notice that they will have more lift (then chevys) to help with the poor flowing heads.

just read advertised HP. 289-302 heads arent too good, but they do ok. Check the specs on a 1985 351w HO truck motor, compare to 350 chevy 4 bbl. 351C and 460 DOVE cast heads are some of the finest flowing heads made. and many people have tried in vain to improve on the stock ford 4v intake manifolds, they are fine tuned from Ford.
all aftermarket manifolds can boast is an improvement in one area, the loss in others isnt worth it. if your Ford has a iron Ford 4v intake on it leave it alone. Invest in cam, and fancy pistons, or try to put 351c heads on it.

You can always put a 383" stroker kit in the 350 Chebby, and it is as cheap as a regular re-build... with Lots of torgue.. Uses a re-machined 400 crank....

Built one of those for a 68 Chevy 4WD, with a granny-low 4 speed. Nothing real fancy, RV grind cam, Edelbrock manifold and carb, headers.

Made an AWESOME plow truck, until I shucked the frontend out from under it. Had it up on blocks in the Spring of 1990 looking for front end parts when the wife sez "All the time and money you spend on that old truck, you'd be better off buying a new one!"

Let's just say the door didn't get a chance to hit me in the butt...

Sold the engine for $2K cash and swapped the rest for a 14' flatbed trailer.
