I have posted my 8N Ford tractor for sale on different sites...the reply I got was from a dealer of AUTO in Switzerland, intending to pay by cashiers check that is drawn from a US bank, says a man in US owes him money. I am asking $2000 for the tractor, he says he is sending a cashiers check in the amount of $6500, and the balance is to be sent back to him.....Does this sound like a scam to you?

This morning I received a reply to a Ford 1710 tractor ad from a Tony@myway.com that read:

"Hello,
I am interested in buying your Goods for one of my client that demanded for it. However, your urgent reply is needed so as to hasten the deal. But please note that payment will be by a cashier check from a Uk Bank.
And also kindly provide the condition and least price of the Goods. Waiting to hear from you very soon.
Thanks"

I basically told him that when I have a turnip truck to sell, I would contact him.

It has a strong fish smell. I'd keep the 8n for awhile.

i would demand that he pays genuine american cash in person before releasing the tractor. there have been far too many scams like this lately.

Just send your money to me,and that way your bank won`t have to call you and tell you, you are overdrawn and owe them $6500.00 plus $25.00 in fees.

I would think that his delinquent accounts payable in no way involve you, and that if he wants the tractor, he can wire you the full amount. Further, due to the overseas scams that are occurring, I'm sure he would understand if you want to hold the money for a couple months just to make sure everything clears before you release the tractor. That is, if he's legitimate, of course. ;o)

I had the same thing happen to me, I told the guy to have the US friend mail him the money order and then wire me a money transfer for my tractor. That was the end of the e-mails concerning the tractor sale.

Yup thats the scam that has been floating around the boards for a while. I think the deal is that the cashiers check is a fraud and you will not get any money.

As Clint & Shep say, scam all the way.

They have a deal figured out where it takes a couple of weeks for the cashiers check to clear, rather than the 1 week we in the USA are used to for these things to clear.

The bank will come back after you, even though you think you have the cash in hand - you will only have it for a short time.

No one is coming for your tractor - they will just enjoy the free money you send them.

Just think about it - why would a 3rd party need to be involved in this? Just stop & think.....

Sure you'll get your money from the bank when you first cash it. A cashier's check is a "pre paid" check. The bank will have to consider it good unless they have notice otherwise. If it looks bad then I think your still suspect for trying to cash it. However, when the cashiers check goes through the bank's system, with your name attached to it, they come after you for the full amount and any fraud charges.

Any thought as to why he hasn't paid the "other guy" by now and why the "other guy" would wait for a tractor purchase to get monies owed to him. Come on folks, SCAM all the way!.

Hi Clint,

A cashier check can have a stop payment issued for 10% of the check amount and if the check does not clear, then the Bank gives you back the 10% minus a service charge, around $25

Certified checks or cashier checks or no better than a personal check.

The only "check" that can not be stoped without turning in the original draft is a Federal Bank Draft. If you loose the Draft it's just like loosing cash but the person who finds the Draft still has to prove identity to cash it.

Ask any Bank and they will tell you the same.

I used to get those ALL the time--ignored them, told to bug off , etc,etc --but could'nt get rid of them --i had one that was really persistant ,i was getting ticked , so i called sheriff and got Ph. No. of secret service....they told me nothing they could do-that kind was a dime a dozen , just ignore them..... ....but i was really getting MAD - so i played dumb with this guy for about a week , he finally ran out of patience and said i had to act ..... ..so i told him to call during bussiness hours to complete the transaction (of course i gave him the sec. service No !!!) ....have'nt heard from one since !!!

These scams occur with lots of advertised items on the net (not just tractors) and in auto trader magazines etc. A friend is advertising a 1998 GMC diesel tow truck and ended up with phone calls from Nigeria and elsewhere in Africa offering a variety of complicated purchase arrangements involving U.S. cashiers checks. They all were scams. The net attracts lots of con artists. Decent people like you and me like to think that most people are honest, respectful and nice. Most are, but the real b*st*rds in this world find the internet really handy to take advantage of people.

Why can't someone do something to catch these a**holes? So all of us honest people can try to make a living?
