Some questions on hot vs cold valve settings ...

I've often wondered why most service manuals specify the "hot" valve setting and I seldom if ever see a "cold" setting specification. I realize that a hot setting would be better and probably more accurate, however I for one could never get a hot setting done what with needing four hands and three wrenches (eg. Continental flatheads). By the time I'm done the engine would be cold. Is there a rule of thumb for setting valves cold if you only have a hot setting specified in the manual?

mike, In most of the hot setting specs, oil temp is considered 140 deg. On push rod engines add .002 to spec for cold set ,steel push rods expand (grow length ) faster than the cast iron block and head.

Oliver tractors specify the setting be done at room tempature. The settings are such that when the engine heats up it will come with-in specs for both hot and cold. Follow your intruction manual if you have one. If you don't, maybe some one will be kind enough to send you the info for your specific tractor.
