I've just bought an acreage (8 acres) and require a cheap tractor w/FEL mainly for snow (300yd driveway) and since I know nothing about tractors , can somebody steer me in the right direction? I'm wondering if there are any makes/models to avoid or gravitate towards based on reliability , parts availability ,etc.thanks in advance for any responses

I guess I should have added that I would also be using the tractor for some minor landscaping duties (levelling , scraping , moving some fill , etc)as well as possibly attaching a mower , the truck/plow combo would work great but I'm trying to NOT accumulate too much junk , which (according to my wife) has been a HUGE problem for as long as we've been together!!!!

My wife is also telling me that I've got too much old Junk. Trying to convince her it's "Old Iron". Also working with the Grandkids to call it "Grandpa's Treaures." Have fun with whatever you get and always keep "Safety First" on your mind when working with equipment. This Board has a wealth of info in the Archives that you may want to review.

Look for a Farmall "H" or "M" or "Super M" with an all hydraulic loader(hydraulic bucket) and aftermarket 3 pt hitch. These tractors are a dime a dozen(cheap!) It will easily handle your driveway snow clearing duties as well as some landscape leveling. Some Ms and Super Ms can be found with power steering which is really nice when running a loader. Parts are readily available at your Case-IH dealer. There are many other good tractors brands/models out there so take a look at the photo ads to get an idea of price.

2040 John Deere, 2000 Ford, 135 Massey Ferguson find one of these in good+ condition. They are not outdated, and will do a good job for you on 8-10 acres. I have owned a 2040 John Deere, but the others are reliable tractors also.

Oliver Super 55.....

I'd look for a 'color' of tractor that is common in your area, parts & knowledge will be easier to find.

You can get a diesel compact tracotor, many are very good. Avoid the super cheap Chineese or 'grey' tractors unless you really know what you are getting into. Parts / relaibility can be a nightmare. Stuff from Japan is pretty good, parts can be difficult if it is not a popular model.

There are a few things to avoid, like Ford's SoS tranny, be aware IHC's TA tranny wears out a lot but is easy & fairly cheap to repair, and so on - a gas engine block turned into a production diesel isn't as strong as a block originally designed to be a diesel.....

What do you want in a tractor?

Power steering for loader use?

Live pto for pto work?

Wide front for loader stability?

Extra hyd ports for using hyd cylinder equipment?

Live hydraulics for the loader?

And so forth. Come up with a list, & then look over the models you have available, see what you need, what you can live without.

Like Jim and the others have pointed out, there are many rigs that will plow snowfrom a roadway. The tractor issue would depend mainly on what other uses you're going to put it to. If you are going to do plowing, discing, harrowing, baleing, mowing, or any of the other myrid of jobs that come with having acreage; you maay want to consider a medium sized tractor that has a FEL, a good 3pt, and possibly a heated cab. Another thing to consider is the type of Dway you have. If it is gravel and 300 yards long, you are going to have to contend with potholes , as well as high and low spots, which you may find being quite a chore with a FEL.

Personally I would go the way of Tom's suggestion, and go with an old 4wd pickup with a blade on the front.

Good lulck in your decision.

I'm guessing if you have 8 acres, you'll find more to do with a tractor than just move snow. The question is, just what else will you need it to do? That's what you need to zero in on. Once you have that figured out, you'll know what features you'll need on a tractor. Will you be mowing those 8 acres? Growing hay? Grazing horses? Those are the things you (and we) need to know before good advice can be given. If all you need to do is move snow, then the pickup with a plow is probably the right answer. If you need a FEL for other tasks as well, then you will be happier with a tractor that has power steering, although it's not impossible to do loader work without it (as thousands of Ford 8N owners with large arms can attest). Will you be running a baler or bushhog? Might want to look for something with live pto. Many different tractors are out there because there are many different jobs that can be done with them. What are yours?

If you mainly need it for snow plowing, consider an old pickup with a front blade. Doesn't have to be road legal, will be a lot faster and do a better job. And it will have a heater!

If you want heat available while plowing a 300 yard driveway, get one of them ceramic jobs that plug into the cigar lighter socket. At least the windshield will be clear by the time you get to the road.
