Thanks to those who replied ,I'm going to see an 8N in "beautiful condition" with a sickle mower , FEL , and a used engine to replace the currently hooped one (thrown rod & hole in block)HOWEVER there are no guarantees that the "new" engine is even usable , the seller said that when he bought it he was told that it came out of a running tractor , anyways he has it listed for $2000CAD ($1450USD) and apparently he's quite firm on the price..... ..any opinions out there?? thanks again

When I started lookin for an 8N 2 years ago, I was surprised by the number of 2N,s and 9N,s that were painted to look like 8N,s. I had done a little research on this board, so had some idea on what to look for. Even then I did get suckered into putting $500.00 down on an 8N, which was actually a 9N. Stopped payment on the check. Too bad there's so many dishonest people trying this scam on Newbies like myself. Finally bought a Fergie TO-20 which I'm happy with. Good luck in your search - be patient.

I've just returned from the "viewing" of the 8N and here's the low down , the loader is in OK looking shape , however it is from a Minneapolis tractor and has never actually been fitted to the 8N , the sickle mower is a Dearborn model#14-15 (rusty) and the tractor tin is nice and both rear tires are new and there is a rather gaping hole in the block & oilpan where a rod tried to exit , I think I'll pass , I'm now off to see a 48 8N that is "rebuilt" w/FEL (mechanical dump) , 6' drawbar , and new rubber this one's asking $4300CAD ($3070USD) seems a bit high but we'll see , thanks again guys

You might be happier in the long run if you take a few minutes to decide what you want out of a tractor.
If you are looking to have a 'project', that's one thing. If you are looking to get some work done soon, that's another thing.
Somewhere in between, well I think that's where most of us started off.
good luck

I think that you were wise to pass up that first tractor... This second tractor sounds a bit pricey, too, though... I'm a bit confused over what a 6' drawbar is, though... Once you see it, could you give a better description? (would this be a boom pole?).

Good luck in your search...

Steve

I think you're doing the right thing by being patient and looking at everything on both ends of the price scale. That way you'll get a better idea of what's available at what price. The more tractors you see, the better you will become at spotting trouble spots and also "ugly" things that really don't matter. Do this long enough and you'll find the right deal that works for you. Get in a hurry and you'll probably overpay for something that doesn't quite fit the bill.

Happy Hunting!

You are taking on a project. I'd be scared of someone who described a tractor with a rod sticking out the oil pan as 'in beautiful condition'????? Holy cow!

Is the loader in good condition - your inspection, not his description!!!! :) _Everything_ there, with working front pump?

The price is a little high, as you have a lot of labor in front of you, as well as probably putting in an engine rebuild anyhow (used engine of a 50 year old tractor - it'll need it!).

Loader is worth a few $100, you'll have some spare engine parts. Do you want this big of a project? The tractor is probably worth $800 tops, the engine $400, loader $200. But I'd think that is all top dollar, & I don't know I'd want to pay top dollar for that big of a project.... You don't know how 'beautiful' the tranny is, etc.....
