Hey Gang, I posted a message in tractor talk, guess I should've put it in here seeins how I have an 8n Ford anyway I went through the charging system all the way. The wires are all hooked up right, everythings grounded right, continuity check at each wire and so on but still no charge. There is a brand new regulator on it when I bought it.Ok so here's the deal. When I hold in on the contacts of the regulator,it does charge really well, which is great as I thought I was in for a new genny. So here's what I did. I removed the reg. and cover and I soldered a wire to one side of the contacts and a wire to the other side. I punched a hole in the reg. cover and ran a toggle switch in the left side of the dash. So now instead of holding the contacts closed, I just throw the switch on for around an hour or so to recharge the battery.NOW! here's the kicker. The tractor was born around the same time I was (1952. I think Im gonna have to make a BIG sign in bright orange letters to tell me to turn the switch on only when the tractor is runnin and to turn it off before I shut it down. Now I know on some friday night,I'm gonna be playing around, gettin drunk and leave the switch on all night. Nice talkin to y'all.

Doug

I'll bet you didn't polarize your generator when you put the new stuff on. youhave already ruind the voltage regulator ~`````````````````I wuold suggest you get another one,and after you hook it up get a wire long enough to tuoch the BAT.terminal, and the GEN.orARM terminal.you will get a spark when you do this(preferably with the engine running)you should see the ampmeter show a charg right away. just my two cents. good luck. Willy.

When you put that new stuff on did you POLARIZE the system (battery wire to armature terminal on reg.)? If you didn't that's probably why it won't charge. If you got your regulator from a NH dealer (8N10505c)it came with an instruction card.

Well, this actually is tractor talk.

Nice way to troubleshoot a problem, but a poor way to run a tractor. you will overwork the gen, and fry the battery.

Bad mod, why not just trouble shoot it and fix it right? What if you run it for long period, forget to turn it off and fry the battery?
