Back in 2000 I bought my first old tractor: a Farmall cub with front blade, It looked bad but ran, and I knew nothing about old tractors. I paid $2000 for it. It needed to be restored but it ran and Deep down I knew it would probably be a headache but I needed a snow pushing machine so I bought it and It turned out to be a pain in the a##. The guy I bought it from is a older guy that buys old tractors and gets them running. He saw me coming and reeled me in. I regret buying it and Have often thought about turning him into the IRS, even if the IRS didnt find anything they could make his life a living nightmare for a while. Two years ago I sold the cub to a guy 2 hours away for $1000. I was upfront and honest to the guy and said it was difficult to start and may need an engine rebuild, I wasnt sure but it had 60 psi engine compression on all 4 cylinders. It may pay to go back to that old guy you mentioned and ask for 1/2 of your money back. Couldnt hurt.

Paid too much for a running 560 Cockshutt that the owner told us had been used by his father in a plowing contest a few weeks before our purchase.
Don't think so. It ran fairly well on a cold Jan. day, however, when the weather warmed up in the spring, white smoke became visible most of the time and examination revealed that the head was cracked in three places and the block cracked in many more places between the cylinder walls. It would hardly propel itself. Needless to say I will never recommend any purchases from the less than honest cockshutt collector. We now have an expensive piece of junk.

Friend told me about this guy who had a tractor with a blown transmission and he kept going till the engine finally blew. Knew he couldn't get anything for it so he poured a little gas on the tire and across the engine and lit it. Then after it was scorched a little and knew you couldn't start it he threw dirt on it to put it out and took it to the auction. Some fool thought it just needed a little rework and paid top dollar for it.

as I read these post it makes me think about some of the adds I see for old tractors.
Picture of tractor with johnson grass as high as the hood.
caption says ran when I parked it. Just needs a battery and a carb. cleaning!! seems to me if thats all it needs I would clean carb. and buy a $50.00 battery just so I could say starts and runs well!!!!! !
Or there is the one that says commpletly rebuilt from the ground up.
When they should have said tuned up and painted!!
JUST MY .02

I had a dealer that I trade with a good bit, call me and tell me about this "great deal" he had for me. He knew i was looking for a 2240 or 2440 Deere. He had this '78 2440 that some doctor used on his horse farm. 1700 hours, and in "perfect" shape. They had done yearly service on it. He said it was the best one he's seen since they were new. The catch.... It had to be bought NOW. the doctor didn't want to accept the trade offer they made, and wanted top dollar. $11000. That is about all you can get out of one in this area. I made the deal over the phone, trusting the dealers word. STAB!!!!! !!!!! !!!!! !!!!! !!!!!
The dealer hauled it to me. After three days of rain, I finally got to use it. In 15 minutes, it had started to over heat, and went through 2 gallons of anti-freeze. BAD NEWS. Electraulysis had eaten a hole in a cylinder sleeve. Apparently the good doctor ran it that way for a while. The crank was scarred, the thrust bearing had split on the oil groove. the block had some damage around the bearing. Weld and machine the block, turn the crank, new sleeves, pistons, rings, oil pump, valve job, and a clutch while it was split, plus a 5 page list of "smaller" parts, plus labor $6975. The dealer I bought it from, was "too busy" to get it into his shop. He just basicly, told me to go away. I needed the tractor when I bought it. I had to go ahead and fix it. I now have a VERY NICE 2440. Everything is just like new, NOW. I have $18000 in it. The dealer won't get another penny of my money. Word has it, he's been doing this kind of stuff to several of his older customers, lately.

You guys got it,but not like me....Paid $1300.00 for a 648 Hr. 4000 Ford.I've already had to put 2 light bulbs in it,the seller said "You can unload this baby and go to plowing" didn't tell me the fuel tank was only 3/4 full!!! Front tires {new} were unevenly inflated by 4 1/2 lbs.He gave me a full set of filters ,but no oil or fluids.Steering whell stained my hands and RUINED the manicure I'd gotten the day before they delivered the tractor. Now he says he'll give me back the $1300.00 but won't pay the 56.00 I spent during the 60 hours I had the machine.Offered me a 3910 @ $2200 Like I'm still a SUCKER!!!!!

Some times it is just good to know you are not alone when it comes to bad deals. My brother and myself bought a JD 5020, and a 14 ft disc. Price wasen't too bad 3500.00. First year had to split the thing to replace clitch input shaft seals. This year worked about 2 hrs and broke a rear axel. Now I have to figure a way to get it back home again. Glad I had my old reliable AC to finish the job.

Lets see, it's a toss up between the tractor that is "A ok, except it needs 1 rear tire)" that I paid $5000 for and then put $5000 in it for an engine, clutch, turbo, injector pump, and 3 more tires. Now I've got 10 grand in a $5000 tractor.

Then there was the truck that has a "newly rebuilt engine" that needed a carburator (cracked) and a set of heads, warped.

Worst I got ripped off was by Brian Jensen Inwood Manitoba Ca.He used to go by pioneert tractor sales now goes by "tracpit" wonder why he had to change names Sold me a tractor saying all it needed was a carb cleaning & set of points also said the finders were eaisly repairable.I paid in full BEFORE he would ship it. When I got it after his driver makeing us pay more CASH to get it The block was cracked about a foot long ( Brian admited knowing that)Had a broken rod & the motor was locked up The finders had about 50 ft of rope to hold them together so they could haul it with out pieces falling off on the road

I hope that this negative experience did not sour you on Canadians in general , a$$holes like this are the vast , vast exception to the rule of folks up here (as I'm sure the same applies down there) these kind of schysters should be shot between the eyes with a ball of their own excrement.

I did twice & got took twice that's enough Second time was by Robert Simm he sells allot on here was only like 65.00 I posted about it & got several emails from others telling about very bad dealing's with him. 3 people said they paid him for the same tractor! I see he uses a different name now too ( wonder why)

I suppose the prudent thing to do would be to enquire about someones reputation or have an independant mechanic evaluate the machine BEFORE handing over the ching !!! seems like a fairly small and interwoven community so somebody should know someone who knows something about somebody else.

PNR,

You'd think it an obvious thing to get a character referral.

I did before taking my tractor in for a transmission rebuild. Got the tractor back, shifting with difficulty which I attributed to new gears. Wrong.

At 22 hours it froze up. The shop promised for two weeks to come out. Then they quit returning my calls. Seems they didn't want to make good on a $5k repair. Finally, in desperation, I winched it to my shop.

They forgot to torque the last three internal bolts, two of which were rolling around in the transmission. When rebuilding, including a new custom gear to replace the custom one that they couldn't find in the first place, I also found 3 roller bearings they left in from the original rebuild. No telling what took the teeth off that gear.

Since then I've learned that often their repairs are fine. Just that they don't make good on mistakes. Anybody comtemplating hiring repairs at LE Woods in Fishersville, Virginia, beware.

Dont know if youd call it taken, but got my 154 LoBoy back in Febuary.Since I have starting using it more frequently this summer I have had to repalce all three spindles on the deck, pto clutch pack, needs a muffler now and carb needs replacing soon.Bought my Cub at the same time from the same guy.had a cracked block, but didnt know it until I cleaned the thing up good, grease and oil and dirt had the crack stopped up,but it was easily fixed.Had some cracks in other places that he didnt tell me about, but there again he may not have known.
