A few days ago I posted about a starting problem on a JD 2950. Starter acted like low battery condition. After eliminating electrical possibilities [it wasn't electric] a couple of you suggested that it might be hydraulic pump loading. Tried turning the steering wheel during start as suggested, EUREKA IT WORKED, Many thanks too all who responded to my question. Now to the next question. I know its a hyd problem now and turning the wheel works in the short run but, what hyd valve have I got to deal with to correct the problem.

as long as you don't have hydraulic problems (slow hydraulics, chatter, low pressure or oil overheating), there is no need to look for them.if there are hydraulic problems, there are series of checks that can be done to pinpoint them. if hydraulics are ok, it can still be an overlooked electrical problem.

It can be any of 6 or 7 valves depending on how the tractor is optioned. An easy check is to start the tractor cold and let it idle for 10-15 minutes at 1200 rpm. Go around the tractor and feel the steering valve, both remote valves, rockshaft housing. If any of these are warm to the touch(warmer than surrounding areas) that valve is leaking . You have other areas that can cause the problem, bad electric destroke valve,hi-lo clutch or lines, pto clutch or lines, stroke control valve in the main pump. These most likely would have to be checked by an experienced service man. If you are not having any other hydraulic problems, your dealer could install an electric de-stroking kit,if your tractor does not have one. This disables the pump while cranking.
