Is the new yellow antifreeze compatible with the old green Prestone? What happens if you mix them?

First of all--I think you mean the orange "dex-cool", don't mix it with green or like Randy said, it will most like turn to mud. Secondly, Dex-Cool isn't any more environmentally friendly than the green stuff, I can't think of what the friendly stuff is, but the Dex-Cool is just as potent as the green. If you do mix the two however, don't bother trying to save it by draining and putting the orange stuff back in--save your money and put green back in and change your auntfreeze every year or two and you will save some money in the long run. TRUST ME, As a GM mechanic myself I haven't seen a place yet that the orange stuff has helped out, in fact I have flushed out more heater cores than I can count because of the orange Dex-Cool and although the aluminum may last a little longer, you probably won't ever have that trouble. The gaskets are going to give you more trouble anyway. Just my .02

Bill,
I am assuming you are talking about(dex cool ant-frz.)DO NOT MIX THEM.The anti freeze is supposed to be safer for the enviroment. The chemical properties in this anti-frz.are much more friendly to alot of different metals & gasket materials (alum.,iron etc..)It appears that it does not break down as fast as prestone also. As far as mixing them, after about 1-3 months, you would swear somebody put MUD in your cooling system.

I just want to cast my vote for Dex-Cool or Texaco (Shell) extended life anti-freeze. As you probably know there is also a version for diesels. The reason the orange anti-freeze turns to mud is that it is cleaning up a dirty system and keeping it in suspension. I ran it in my 87 Buick LeSabre for over 7 years and the overflow tank stayed clean all this time and I never changed the fluid. I put the orange stuff in my 4320 when I got it and it turned to mud, but the system was dirty. I cleaned the radiator and refilled with new orange fluid and it has stayed clean. I have the orange stuff in 9 different engines and I like it. Just my vote.

This is apparently what happened to a '96 S10 Blazer I bought. I have flushed the system and I'm confident the system is clean but cannot say the same for the overflow tank. I have found no way to get the "mud" out of that tank. I have decided I must live with that dirty tank or replace it. Any ideas on salvaging the tank?
