I just freed the motor on one of my M John Deeres' by spraying a spray called Heat Valve Lubricant into the plug holes. I got the stuff at a GM dealer parts counter. After about a week, I took off the starter and applied pressure to the flywheel with a pry bar on the ring gear. You can put an awful lot of pressure on the ring gear without damage as long as it is a constant pressure. I don't recomend hitting the bar with a hammer or anything like that. Mine popped loose instantly, and had been stuck for at least 6 years. Good Luck!

One of the things that helped free up my 420 was hot water. I took the hoses off the radiator and plumbed an old 20# propane tank on it's side into the bottom of the block, then filled the tank and engine to the top with water. I put heat to the bottom side of the tank and got the water boiling. I used a gas burner, but you could use wood, charcoal, or a torch. Heat and let it cool a few times.

I recommend the 3 P’s

1. Penetrating oil ( I like brand name S OK however WD 40 will work)

2. Pressure

3. Patience (24 hours)

Remove the spark plugs and pour in as much penetrating oil as you can. Mystery Oil is also very good.

Put the tractor in first gear and rock the tractor back and forth just a little to cause the engine to try and move. Try and apply some constant pressure against the engine. On jeeps I have done this with hanging a weight off of the end of pipe secured to the fan belt pulley by vice grips. On a tractor, hanging something like a 55 gallon barrel to the rear of the tractor tire about 3 feet off the ground. Then filling it with water. This weight would normally cause the tractor to roll backwards. AND the transmission will apply pressure to the motor.

Set this up and allow it to work for you for a day or two. Leave the spark plugs out and refill the plug holes a couple of times a day. I would also push against the tractor each time. I bet it will become unstuck.

Take the starter off the tractor. Sometimes the starter will jam in the flywheel and the engine will not turn. If this is the problem, dragging the tracor risks doing serious damage. If this is not the problem, the tractor pull might have to wait for a later scheduled event. Is the tractor pull important enough to pull the head if necessary?
