You might want to check out the portable 12v electric winch Harbor Freight carries. They work remarkably well. You can bolt it up to the riding mower / lawn tractor if you wish, or use the rear hook to grab the tractor.

I got one of these for my 2wd truck because I was tired of getting constantly stuck. It works quite well. No, it's never going to lift my truck up a cliff, but it certainly does the job of pulling me out of muddy fields and such.

That tractor is pretty light - I don't see why you could not put a winch on it though. I'd think the tractor start moving torwards your "winch load" before the winch reached peak current draw.

I have a vision of the craftsman getting catapaulted after the wheel blocks slip. lol.

It really should not be all that much trouble. Most riding mowers have a flat frame in the front near the front wheels. Many times this will be where a small bumper can be bolted on. On ebay I have seen some good deals on atv winches.

I can see where it would come in handy to pull something like a large limb off a fence.

However as the other guy mentioned, be sure the frame can stand up to the extra pull you will pulling against it.

Not sure I want to ask why, but I suppose a winch makes more sense than wings and a propeller...

Are you getting the tractor stuck and need to pull yourself free or are you trying to pull something with the tractor?

Biggest problem you'll have is finding something strong enough on the tractor to bolt the winch to. Most tractors like that are made of pretty flimsy metal. Also, battery and charging circuit aren't nearly big enough. You'll need something in the range of a couple of hundred amps if you plan to use the winch much at all. Not only will you need a bigger battery, you'll need a bigger alternator to keep it charged. Could get a bit pricy. Ever consider a hand crank (boat type) winch or a come-along?

Uhh Jack, its a lawn tractor...
A 1000# winch isn't going to need a "couple of hundred amps" and he isn't going to ever need more than a 1000# winch because of how little a lawn tractor weighs.

As soon as he gets off, the engine is gonna quit. Okay, you can get off, hold the seat down with your hand to defeat the interlock and push with the other hand. That works pretty good. But, it's dang near impossible for a one-armed man.

Yup, but ya get a big enough winch it won't matter if the motor's runnin', least not until yer battery's dead. Ain't no easy answer to this man's dilemma. ;o)
