Has any one else ever started a fire from a rock strike while mowing dry grass? I have started three already in the years I have been mowing? I was lucky enough to get all three under control. Every time I have a rock strike now I stop and look for smoke.

Keeping a pressurized water extinguisher on hand is a good idea. Here's another tip ( from a career FireFighter - me ). If you place your thumb over the end of the nozzle, it'll disperse the water some to cover a better area and be more efficient rather than just a straight stream shooting out.

Stan;
Saw a bit on RFD_TV the other day were a man took an old 30lbs. freon jug (could use an old 5-8 gal propane bottle) and set it up with a 25 ft, hose and a way to fill it with water.
Filled it about 80% full, then used his air comp. to add about 100lbs pressure to put out fires.
Might be something you would want to think about bulding, if you are real firebug.
Good luck.

UG!

I mowed roadsides for one summer when I was in college. I had a fire start one time because the bearing on the end of the flail mower flew apart and the hot metal started the grass on fire.

I got it out fairly quick but it was amazing how fast that fire spread.

I had the alternator on a IH 674 catch fire. I was ploughing at the time and I covered the alternator with damp soil and put it out before it had a chance to spread.
Looking back though, I wish that I had let the bugger burn ( it never was any good)

Not really unusual !!!keep in mind that there is a lot of naturally occuring flint laying around in rocks, flint+ steel + fuel = fire !!!

The underslung exhaust on my Ferguson lit it up one day. Now I use the Dexta.
