I own the L, and the G, i've used the cub.

For looks, the Cub wins. For pulling the LA wins. At least that's how i see it.

The Cub, G, and Pony pretty much have the same engine, and i don't think much of it!!

Robert

Nebraska Tractor tests show the maximum drawbar pull of the 1947 Cub as 1596#. The Allis G 1948 was 1143#. The Massey-Harris Pony 1948 was 1432#. The JD LA 1941 was 1936#. This from C. H. Wendel book. It should be noted that the JD is a much heavier tractor than any of the others. I suspect that the figure for the Allis may be a misprint as the performance in real life of the Allis is quite good. Of these, I have driven only the Cub and have owned some Cub or another continuously for over 50 years. The Wendel book has a few obvious mistakes- as do some of my posts.

Just look around you. You can still see a lot of Cubs and Allis G's working for a living. The L's & LA's are all on trailers being hauled to shows.

I currently have a Cub, Pony, L and a BF Avery V.
Cub is by far the most refined of any of them.
L has the best ground speed (gearing).
V most pulling power (again, gearing).
Pony seems to get the most looks and comments at local shows (could be regional though as not alot of them or V's around these parts).
I guess I need a G next!

Hey Chuck, you are the guy I need to talk to!!

I am just trying to get my "collection" started and I love all the small tractors.

I would have all the above mentioned if I could afford it, plus a AC 'B".

Would love to hear more info on the differences, like and dislikes of all your tractors.

Drop me a email!! g42guy@yahoo.com

Any consideration for the VAC? Has power AND good looks. Maybe not as versatile as a Cub, but still worth considering in your shopping list.

The Cub would be the choice if availability of the widest variety of implements or availability of parts are important for your needs. Considerations such as beauty are very much personal preference.

The Pony is versatile also. Over 20 implements were offered including a forklift configuration and in later life a diesel engine.

I dont know about the Pony but I have both a Cub & LA and the LA has more power & I also think the LA is a better looking tractor.

As a youngster growing up my father was partner in the local JD dealership, and I had a ragged, but right '39 "L",with the Hercules engine and it had been bored .030 over size, and even still ran the Edison- Splirdorf Magneto. Fellow up the road had a new '49 Cub, he bought for his son to plow the garden with. His son always laughed at my ragged "L" as I pulled the crank throught twice to start it, while he pulled the electric start lever, so I finally heard all of it I wanted, I challenged him and his new Cub to a "pull" and, so we hooked them together with a chain from drawbar to drawbar, and I pulled him around the place backwards, and I never heard any more wise cracks about my ragged "L"!

Why? You can get more out of a lawn tractor.

More trouble, maybe - that G will still be running long after your lawn tractor is in the landfill.

I would also pick a G before any of these others (actually, I did). The market seems to agree with me ...

The cub runs smoother and has a lot more attachments available.
