Automatic Steering Brakes-opinion

This deals with tractors with steering brakes that engage themselves if you turn the steering wheel far enough, such as the Oliver 70s, some early Farmalls, etc.

I was just wondering if any of you disconnect these for safety reasons, at least for a show tractor? The ability to swing around on a dime is nice when mowing or cultivating, but at shows this would be pretty dangerous if it happened when you didn't want! Or with a new operator... And if you did need to turn short, that is what the pedal is for!

I plan on keeping the linkage disconnected on my Oliver (assuming it goes back together!)

I have several F-series tractors with the automatic brakes and take them to shows. You have to turn the wheel pretty far to get the brake to engage. When I park the tractors I turn the wheels to lock the brake so if someone hits the hand brake and releases it the tractor still will not move. I could see a problem like you are talking about if the brakes were not ajusted right but at that point you would not be able to drive the tractor at all so it would take care of itself. With hand brakes the automatic brakes are nice to have. These tractors are so slow anyway that running over people is not a problem unless you do something really stupid. The biggest problem is someone running over you. I don't think you can idiot proof the world but think the government is trying to. Good Luck Fred.

Maybe I'm missing something, but how would the automatic brake be a safety hazzard? Grew up on Farmall Regular that had them. They only apply when the wheel is turned, preventing the front wheels from "plowing" straight ahead. Foot brakes weren't available on Regular, F-20, F-30 until 37 or 38, but could be retro-fitted on earlier models. The only "Danger" I can see is having hand brake on one wheel, but they didn't go fast enough to create a problem.

I think it would be a danger if it applied the brake when the operator (me?) didn't expect it, swung the tractor around, and just happened to be around a crowd of people at the time.

I just brought this up for conversation, I'm not saying that it should be disconnected on every tractor that has it, or anything dumb like that. It is just that tractors taken to a show don't usually have a need to turn sharp through sloppy mud, and the system could be a POSSIBLE hazard if driven by someone inexperienced, or if something fast happened, and a driver cranked the wheel around, etc.

Just something to think about.

Brandon, I have my grandfathers Oliver 60. I do not even have the linkage rods to replace. The tractor was used for so many different tasks that the option got in the road. I have looked at a lot of tractors at shows that had the option and very few still have all the parts to make it work. As for me, I'll use my feet on the brakes for turning.

I plan on leaving the rods in place, if I can, just disconnected. Harder to lose them that way!
