round bale and tractor lift problems

Well its like this, the round bales I baled this spring are very heavy. I have a spike for the front end loader that is on my 801 Ford, But when I pick up one of these bales it makes the back of the tractor very light. The tires are filled and I have a back blade on with 6 weights from an Ih on it and its still not enough weight to keep the tires on the ground. I hit a rock with 1 of the tires tonight and it jumped up about a foot in the air and need less to say my heart just about jumped out and ran away. Any ideas on what to do about this problem. I don't really want to fire up the Cat 950 just to move a bale of hay. Thanks for any ideas

Have moved 1200lb. round bales with the loader on an 860 ford for years. We built a frame that will hold a 55gal drum, and mounts on the three point hitch. Fill that drum level to the top with rocks, and you'll be fine. Like has been posted, be extra careful with the front end. Don't hit rocks, etc., or it will break. I do now move them on the three point of a 170AC, and like that setup much better.

I have a counter weight on its my back blade with 6-85lbs weights on the blade that heavyer then a 55 gal. drum fill with rock. I think the problem is that these bales weigh around 2500 lbs. I used to big a tractor last year and ran it to slow when I did the baleing. I only baled 25bales where most of the time we get around 40. I sold that tractor because of that problem. But thanks for the idea any how

Well, a good tight bale is a _good_ problem to have. :) Less twine, less spoilage....

If you continue to use round bales, a rear 3pt carrier is _the_ way to go. Saves a lot of waer & tear on the machine. The rear end is always a lot tougher, and in winter if you have snow & ice like I do the weight is where you need it for traction. A good new one is under $300, farm sales you can find for under $100. I like the fork-lift style for my use.

I baled some ditch hay for someone last year, he came with a bobcat, guess he wasn't used to my big 5x6 bales, couldn't lift them. So he got another bobcat, same model but it has more lift, that one made it. I said I could make smaller bales, he said no way, keep doing what I'm doing, less transport, less twine, less fuss.

Hi Old,

I don't wanna be a nay-sayer, but I think you are trying to roast a 3lb chicken in a 1 lb pot.

Moving those bales is more dangerous than you would suspect; every year, someone either gets hurt or killed by doing it improperly or using the wrong equipment.

Just trying to help,

Allan

Use a rear counterweight. You can fit one up to the three point hitch readily enough. Or you can even use an impliment on the back.

I do use that it has the back blade on with 6- 85lbs on the blade and it still lifts the back tires

Hay why don't us put a 3 point bale spear on the back to compensate for the over loaded front end. You get to wreck the front end twice as fast.

It might prevent wrecking the front end. The load on the back will take lots of weight off the front. Without the bale on the front, you might steer with the brakes.

Must be a small bale tho to get an 850 to handle it on the front end? I can lift most of the 5x6 bales I make with the 3 pt on my 960, same basic machine.

I'd put the spear on the rear end, on the 3pt.

I don't think you are reading what I'm saying I'm useing the front end loarder and its lifting up the back tires I'm not useing the 3 point.

Sorry I was unclear - not an uncommon thing for me! :)

What I meant was, maybe you should be using the rear end with a 3pt bale carrier. The front end of an 800 isn't all that strong, and you are really dangerously close to tipping over, & I know 800's didn't come with a ROPS. Be a whole lot easier on you & the tractor if you moved your bales with the 3pt lift rather than forcing so much weight on the front end of the machine.

Old,
Use the 3pt instead of the loader. Not rocket science here to get what the other post was getting at. I'm not meaning to sound bad here just saying use the back end and not the loader. The front end on that tractor probably isn't heavy enough to last very long doing bale moving with it in the first place.

it is my understanding that some of the older model tractors built before the mid 1970's, did not have the best of lift capacitys. my 1973 ford 4000 3 pt. leaves something to be desired also. i can lift and carry a 4x4 round bale on the ft loader and a 4x4 round bale on the 3 pt. spike both at the same time on my JD 870 compact. sure can't do that with the old ford. i guess the older tractors were not supposed to carry heavy loads.
