Have little tractor skills--attempting to use 986 to launch boats on a steep grade. Tractor seems to be in good working order but when going down a steep grade it seems to slow down & change "tone".
Conscerned---am going down 25%grade--w/tractor only. On level ground tractor is very useable for grading just feels strange on a grade & I do not know if this is normal. Anyone w/some hours on this model would be nice to talk with. Most people use these on fairly level ground, I have a lot of grade w/a deep lake @ the end.
Thanks,
Brian

those tractors are free wheeling even withe the TA in direct witht he engine off. If someone wants you to talk or you have the motor die. Have lots of patience so you can drag the tractor out and dry it out!!!! I would rather have a Farmall M with good brakes. Just my 2 cents worth

we had our 856 hooked to the silage cutter and hired man had stopped at the highway stop sign. He forgot to shift it down and let out on the clutch and killed it. He tride the brakes and it would not stop cause they went to the floor and he let out on the clutch and nothing. It jackknifed and broke the pto off on the tractor and the tractor ran over the silage cutter toung. The tractor was about 2 years old with a little over 1500 hours as I remember because it was the first time we had taken it to the IHC Dealer for any repairs. YOU THINK I AM WRONG ABOUT IT FREE WHEELING THEN TRY TO PULL IT TO START IT!!!!! !!!!

Thats why you don't kill the engine. Does not free wheel while running. Nearly all HEAVY tractors built in the 60's 70's and early 80's operate this way. If your hired hand couldn't even drive the thing down the road it scares me to think what he did with the tractor in the field.

The pump behind the MC valve may be cavititing. Are steering or brakes affected? I'd overfill the hyd oil by at 3 gallons or so, see if that makes a difference.
