exhaust valve color

I am still working on my Wisconsin VF4D engine. I have been concerned that I have one cyl running too hot, but now think I might have it fixed. One reason that I think it may be too hot is that the exhaust valve is white while the other cyl exhaust valves are black. Any advice on what color a exhaust valve ought to be??

Thanks

Bruce

The color is determined by operating temperature burning deposits from the fuel, and any oil it's using. The valves, when new, would all have a silver/gray color of steel look.

Are you the person I replied to several days ago about the odd and even-firing engines, and did you check this out? If the timing is late on that cylinder due to a mismatch of crankshaft firing position, and distributor cam firing position you're gonna get hot valves on the late cylinder.

Bob, are you saying that the TDCs are not spaced at 90 degree intervals? I think I'm about to learn something. Could you explain? Thanks. MT Pockets.

HI Bob,

I said that I think I have the correct distributor, but now that I think more about that, I am only guessing that I do as mine is a VF4d engine and I have the even numbered cams, I also have a VH4d engine, and that has the odd number cam, so I figure I have the correct cam....but I may not, Any suggestions, I think I could turn the engine by hand and watch to see when each cyl is at TDC then see if the rotor is pointing at (or near that plug) as it is timed now and runs 27 degrees advanced...would you agree??

I have the manuals and timed it per the manual ( run at more than 1800 rpms and time to 27 degree mark) I could find no mention of the two differant distributor cams in the manual, but sure enough, they are differant between those two engines.

Thanks for your help.

Bruce

Yep...thats me...The timing was off, but I do have the correct distributor. I guess I just don't know what color the valves ought to be.. I did get a response that said that it should be white.

What do you think??

Thanks for all your help

Bruce
