Having a problem with fluid leaking out of the steering colume. I don't have my manual in yet and afraid to run the tractor much more. Can someone tell me what this might be. I assume it is a seal that will need replacement.

Thanks for all your help,
Bill

There is a seal at the base of the steering column, at the top of the steering gear.

You have to remove and/or loosen a lot of the pedestal/ dash to get to the three bolts that hold the steering volumn to the gear. Pull it off upward, completely off the steering shaft. If you are clean and carefull, you can get by with the seal and one "O" ring. If there are other steering gear leaks, it would be best to get the complete seal kit and remove the gear and go through it, but the last one I did turned out OK the simple and cheap way. Also, no adjustments are disturbed this way. Email, if you'd like a diagram, and part numbers.

Bill, had the same problem about a year ago...I thought it was rain water that had collected , then froze ..displacing the seal, and mine was a gusher when I started it up one day...it had never leaked there before...Had to take the column out of the tractor and purchase an update to fix it....I did the work myself, but would cost a bunch if I paid a mechanic to do it....John Deere dealer ordered what I needed....Mine is a diesel backhoe tractor and the loader presented some problems reaching in and taking it apart, several seals, and now I have a new steering wheel and cap to keep the water out of there...the old steering wheel was so chipped at the cap base that it always caught on my Carhartt jackets....I did not pull the entire unit or rebuild the entire unit, only fixed what was needed, as you never know what is going to blow next just by looking at the frayed hoses, etc..Let me know how it's coming along...Uncle

If it's the seal above the front axle on an RU, they usually leak some, but dirt prevents puddles when parked on concrete. This slow leak was a casting flaw, costly to fix 'perfect'. We dropped
the front axle assembly, in winter, planned to correct, but with the seal off center, the labor
was a waste. The new seal improved it some, but
sounds like your leak is elsewhere. Good luck.
