My neighbor has a MF65 tractor and uses a 6" brush mower he is tring to mow about 60 acres of warm season grasses. He owns his own business and works about thirteen hours a day and cant keep up with his mowing.I have been looking for a bigger and better mower for him and found a land pride, fifteen foot.Is this too big for the Massey? I have seen people using the little Ford 2000 pulling big batwings. He does not have the funds to replace whole unit this year, and do not want to tear up the Massey if unit is just too big.

Buy a small herd of beef cattle and the problem will solve itself.

Why not use a sickle bar mower? The Massey could easily run a 9 footer, it would use a whole lot less fuel too.

He could get someone to make hay from it. But or also, after a 13 hr day he needs an hour or so on a tractor in addition to the St. John's wort for the psyche. An hour a day would cycle around about every 2 weeks and have enough leeway to miss a day or 2 now and then.

The 1209 will boss a MF 65 around. Drawbar load is intense. As for the Hills? FORGET IT.

I pull a 15 foot heavy duty BMB mower with a Farmall M. Regardless of what anybody thinks or say's I can pull it anywhere. We also pull a 15 Bushhog with a 584(52 HP). I have a neighbor that pulls a 15 Woods with a 2150 JD I think it is about 45 HP. It has been my experiance that 15 foot is very little harder to pull than a 7 footer once you get it going. I do have pics of it in tractor photo's of the M mowing KY hillsides.

I bushhogged a 40 acre field one time with a 6' bushhog and it took me almost 14 hours steady going. never again will i do that. even the grass was very low. i would look for a 8' pull cutter for the massey or get a bigger rig altogether like a 65-90 hp tractor and a 15' batwing cutter.

First things first. That Massey isn't big enough to handle that amount of ground in a timely manner. Especially if has a good deal of heavy growth.

60 acres is a good deal of real estate and would be all all day job even for a 20 foot swather.

I was thinking about these kind of questions that come up here while cutting the field next to my house, it was about 4-5 feet tall, mostly grasses, orchard and the like, would have made decent hay, also had some weeds within the grasses in some places. Conditions were ideal, been dry the last week. It was certainly a thick growth, my blades were sharp and tractor was running good, '55 Ford 850, propane powered, (supposed to be 45 HP + or - ) with an SE-6 Rhino (6'-0") rotary cutter. I had it set low and while pulling the hills, it was all this tractor had to keep up, also left some rough areas as I kpe the mower low. If I had left it up high, probably not so hard to keep up. Definitely hard work when in tall grasses and the like, when it's knee high or less, I can run 2nd or 3rd gear with the same mower on a low setting. I had let the grasses top out and seed, seems to thicken up and has taken over where weeds have been, have no idea if that works, but at this height even in dry conditions it's tha hardest work this tractor does every year, I'm thinking I ought to pick up a sickle for areas like this, we had a side mounted one on a 64 4000 and it seemed to be less work for the tractor.

My neighbor has a new JD batwing type that he pulls with one of his larger diesel JD's, no way a small tractor would run it, that is for sure. Sounds like he's got his hands full keeping up with that much acreage the way it's set up and trying to run a business, might want to see what alternatives are to avoid so much cutting, even with a larger tractor and mower, still takes time to do it, kind of good to get some seat time but.... I can recall trying to keep up with similar acreage here, farmer would let it set for several years then want to use it again and I'd have to cut every field with heavy weeds and some brush, using a similar sized rig, would take me at least a week, last time he stopped using those fields, they never got cut again and are now wooded, took 20 years.

I wouldn't go over an 8' drag style mower on that massey.. and at that.. it would be a workout.

My ford 5000 pulls a 10' mower.. and it is 67 pto hp. I pull a 15' mower with my 7610s.. which is in the 90pto hp range.

I betcha a 6' mower takes 2 long 13+hr days to mow..

If you want to creep along and the grass isn't very tall, it might work. Still would be hard on the tractor. My experience has been that 7 ft is enough mower for a 60 hp tractor, unless you are running a "finishing" mower. I run a 15 ft mower on a 120 hp tractor and at times I wish it was more like a 140 hp. We have an 80 hp MF 285 and I wouldn't want to use it on the 15 footer. Figure at least 90-95 hp for a 15 ft mower, although a JD 4010 which has a little lower hp will do a good job.

from tractor data looks like the mf65 has 41 hp at the pto. the woods website for the 15 ft batwing will take anywhere from 65hp min to 200 hp max to run that batwing. you'd be workin the shorts off that tractor to pull that deck. mowing 60 acres, i'd go for something in the 100-125 hp range to get done. maybe he should put hay in there and have someone bale it for him.

It'll handle that 15 footer in transport position. If that grass gets any size to it the 6 footer will give the massey all it wants, maybe a 7 or 8 and that would be about the limit.
