I found a 48" woods mower for a good price and purchased it thinking I could modify it to run as a belly mower for my Super A. It does a fair job but I have to go abnormally slow to get a good cut. I'm thinking my blade speed is too low- anyone know the typical blade speed in rpm for a 48" 3 blade woods rotary mower?

Was the mower from a Cub? A Cub turns backwards from a normal PTO. I have a Cub and 100. Wanted to move the Woods belly mower from the Cub to 100. Found out I'd need new blades AND new pulleys for tractor and mower due to different PTO speeds and direction. Project still incomplete.

Hope this helps.

I have the woods L59 they claim 120 mph blade tip speed. Once I ordered blades, it has three, and the first and second set were sharpened on the wrong side. The third set were right. Apparently they make blades to turn clockwise, or counter-clockwise. CHECK and see if yours are turning the right way. My L59 cuts great.

Matt: I've got a 5-footer on my Cub, and though I don't have any firm numbers for you, I will say that the blades turn VERY fast--the first time I fired it up, I thought the whole tractor was going to take off and fly away! Mine is also a 3-blade setup, though I'm not sure of the brand--any identifying marks were long gone when I got the mower.

No one answerd your question yet, did they! I would compare blade tip speed ( in feet per minute) with a mower that works well. then maybe you could increase the diameter of the pulley on the tractor. a three blade 48" has to turn quite fast because the blades are so short. A push mower with a 21" blade turning 3600 rpm would be 19,782 fpm! A 17" blade ( which is aproximatly what you have) would have to turn 4447 rpm for the same tip speed. I dont think you have to turn it this fast, but it gives you the idea.

Those woods mowers always turned too slow, for a decent cut. Won't cut behaeer grass at all. I sold mine and just let my mother n law cut it all, with a sling blade. Keeps her out of the house in the summer. goof
