JD 5020 Help

I need to remove the rear wheels on my 5020. On the taper lock I see three bolts on each side which come loose ok. On one side there are three regular bolts , and two bolts with long heads. This is the side with the jacking ratchet. What is the purpose of the two bolts with the long heads. Thanks Stan

I have used a 20ton jack on the inside of the wheel pushing out on a 4440 and a 4650 but on my 4640 it would not come loose so I built a puller to put the jack on the end of the axel and I blew the side out of the jack had a 4 ft. jack handle Then I called a JD dealer he told me to make a swinging sledge like they have it was a 8ft. 5in. well casing pipe with a 1in. plate welded over the end Then hang it from a loader from 2 chains and line up with the end of the axel and swing it into the end of the axel I asked if it would hurt any thing and he said that it wouldn't . I still had to put the jack inside of the wheel and That sledge weighs about 300 lbs and must of hit it hard 20 times but it did pop loose it did break the wedge I got a used one at a salvage yard for $65

To bust them loose on my 4010 or my 4630 I loosen all 6 wedge bolts (inners and outers) and screw the "forcing bolts" in. I then put the tractor in gear, get it rolling, and then jam on the brakes. It has never failed yet and my 4010 hadn't been moved in 30 years. Only loosen the wedge bolts, don't take them out. If you remove the bolts and your wedges pop loose your wheel may fall off.

I've seen JD mechanics take a sledge hamer and smack the end of the axle to help jar them loose I've done that on my 4630's it helps.And have also broke the wedge too with to much pressure with the bolts.

The operator manual has all the details on how the system works, and like the other poster says, you need to do it in the right order.Even then, the tapered sleeve can be tough to move. Penetrating oil is in order, as well as having a pipe handy- just slightly larger than the axle diameter, longer than the axle stub, no bigger OD than the sleeve. Weld a heavy plate on one end so you can whack it with a post maul. If the wheels are moved infrequently they can be more than difficult.

The bolts with the long heads are jackscrews. You have to screw them IN (after you loosen the 3 regular bolts) to drive the tapered hub OUT. My experience has taught me it's never an easy job. It requires a lot of patience and penetrating oil! The notches on the sides of the long heads are indicators of how far you can screw them into the wheel. Also, if the taper is really rusted in, and you apply too much force, you end up breaking the flange off the taper. Handle with kid gloves!
