I got a quart of PPG Flambeau Red today and they sold a quart of reducer with it. I am going to be brush painting a plow with this. Is it like thinner? It says one part paint an a half part reducer this might sound stupid but does that mean use half as much reducer as paint and mix them? Like 1 quart would take a half quart of reducer? I know some of you guys are experienced with this and I need advice. Thanks guys for any help e-mail me if you preffer. R Wyler

It is similar to a thinner but different in that it has an operating temperature range. You buy the reducer for the temperature that you will be painting at. It controls the drying time and thereby allows the paint to level and become smooth without sags and runs. Some experimentation is required.

Thanks I didn't know that it was that touchy. I'll have to try it without and then if I need it I'll start with a little and keep adding until it is right. R Wyler

Do a bit of experimenting first to see how it brushes on. Often, automotive-type paint (which I assume your paint is) isn't really made to be brushed on like machinery enamel, etc. You might find it difficult to lay on a nice smooth layer of paint without brush marks and blemishes.

Yes I am going to see how it goes at first without thinning it down. I doubt it really needs thinning. R Wyler

I'm no expert but if you are going to paint with a brush then you don't need to use thinner or reducer. Reducer is used to reduce the thickness of paint so you can spray it on thru a gun. Wheb I touch up using JD paint I don't reduce it but I do use the hardner. If I'm off base here I'm sure one of the experts will jump in.

Ok I will use my own judgment when I look at it to see how thick it is. I suppose I should use hardner but it should do well like it is. R Wyler

i paint with ppg on my tractors. make sure to put a primer on first. ppg is a uraethane. it wont stick to bare metal very long. since your going to brush it on ,[expensive paint for a brush], make sure to use a hardner. it will take weeks for it to dry without it, if ever. pg
