I am in the process of purchasing a new 4 X 4 compact tractor and have narrowed it down to either a Kubato B7800 or a Deere 4115. Both tractors have similiar specs however the Kubota has a 4 cylinder 30 hp gross/22 pto hp while the Deere has a 3 cylinder 24 hp gross/20 pto hp. Both tractors have hydrostatic transmissions and front end loaders.

The JD is about $ 1000 more then the Kubota which seems like a lot in order to get that green paint but maybe the tractor is really worth it. I have both dealers close by so I don't believe service should be a big problem. I have always heared that J.D. are really good machines that hold their resale value well but I can't say that I have ever heared anything bad about Kubato's. Like to hear any pro's or con's from anyone that has owned either of these machines. Thanks for your input.

I have one of the older 20 series Fords and it is pretty great. Neighbor tried to buy it from me (to no avail) and eventually bought a NH "boomer" model. I won't say much, but I won't recommend it. Why buy new? Get an older one that is made mostly of iron, less plastic.

I have used a '99 Model 4100 John Deere on my parents farm. Its a nice little tractor for doing a lot of small tasks. There are some things beyond power to look at. The hydrostatic transmission is good for loader work, belly mowing, and tilling. The John Deere loader will come off easily and stand up to remount without having to muscle it. There are a number of implements available through John Deere. I think if you move up to the 4200 series, there is a backhoe that can be mounted on it. This tractor has the industrial tire that gives better traction than the turf tire, but does not tear up the lawn like an agricultural tire. Also, these little units lack weight and the tires need to be filled with fluid and even rear ballast if doing heavy loader work. Likewise, because of the narrow wheelbase of these compacts they can turn over easily. I have had a rear wheel lift off the ground more than once while on a hillside (takes your breath away). John Deere support is also something to consider. I added a homemade device to the hitch. To do this I called John Deere and they faxed me the exploded views for all the hitch and lift assembly parts and their part numbers within the hour that I called. There was also an update on a safety latch for the loader that was sent to us free. It came with complete instructions for installation. I know of some people here with some of the small foreign made tractors that can not get parts after a few years after manufacture. These are just some things to consider for the long run.

DH, I bought a Kubota in 1986, B8200, 4X4, front loader, about 16.5 pto hp. Model compared to JD 750 at the time of purchase, as far as price and power. I decided on Kubota, and have no regrets, it's an amazing little tractor. I run a 5' bushhog all day on 3 gallon of fuel, pile snow 7 feet high all winter, and haul 2 ton of wood on the back half of a pickup turned woods trailer. Don't get me wrong, I'm not slamming the JD, I have 3 of those, all made in the 50's, but if I were in the market for a new compact diesel, I believe it would be another orange one.

I bought a L3130 Kubota last Dec. It starts good in the cold weather and drives very nice. I got the hydro. transmission and its great for what I use it for. Test drive them both and see which one feels the most comfortable and go from there.

You have visited

www. tractor bynet . com ? (remove spaces)

Much more compact info there.

Like many folks around here, I'm a purist & don't like the hydro tranny. ;) but either machine will be fine, they are about equal for quality & resale & such. I'd shop for dealer & value I like, which controls are handier, which seat feels better at this point. by the way, I have niether, just reciently I got a different color compact...

We bought a 4600 JD two years ago and just love it. with a heavy duty loader and the 12-12 power reverser trany. there is a good JD dealer 25 miles away and don't know where the nearest kubota dealer would be (100+ miles). A no brainer for us!
