Saw a piece on TV last night about a tractor/truck. It is called a Unimog built by Mercedes-Benz.
This thing can pull a plow; has three point hitch; front and rear PTO; all wheel drive. Attachments seemed endless. Loader; side arm mower; snow thrower ect.
Thing that got me is it looks like a truck and when you finish plowing you can unhook plow and drive this tractor/truck to town at 70 MPH.
So is this the wave of the future?
Checkthis thing out.

I am an American, but did spend the summer of 1986 working on a pig farm in Germany as a participant in FFAs exchange program.

The farm I was on used Fendt, but there was a neighbor farmer who was farming with a Unimog. I thought it was a good idea. My boss thought they were not cost effective. He said they used a lot more fuel than a regular tractor and the only benefit was the high road gear. That makes sense to me when I think about it. You are using four smaller wheels that will have to turn faster and many more times to do the same work in the field. He was under the impression that parts were prohibitively expensive. (Although, he had a small Mercedes as his family car.)

I don't know about the cost of parts in Germany anymore, but do know that Mercedes Truck parts are almost always on the high side over here. You still can't get them from your Mopar dealer.

I don't recommend trying to farm with a Unimog on this side of the Atlantic.

My 2 cents

The original Dodge Powerwagon was also advertised at the time to be used as a tractor replacement. Saw an ad once where one was pulling a rotary hoe. It looked like it had a three-point hitch.

Mercedes-Benz submitted a Unimog to Nebraska for testing in 1957. It did 28.43 MBHP. Surely the newer ones are much more potent than that.

There is a company here in the U.S. that produces an agricultural vehicle called a 'Tructor'. which is similiar. They used to have a web-site.

Yup, I been using one on my farm for the past 4
years and it can do just about any ag function.
It might get up to 70 mph if the cliff is high
enough, but on the road with a stiff wind at your
back 48-50 mph tops. I like to rake hay with my
Unimog and NH 57 3-pt rake then drive through the
town with the rake still mounted. It really freaks
out the locals, but they are getting used to the
idea. I do the same with my cement mixer and disc
harrow.

A UNIMOG is not a thing of the future as it has been around for over 40 years that I know of. (I'm 55) It's the workhorse of Germany and has been marketed in the USA by Case Industrial dealers. We had one in our fleet that was equiped with a snowblower. I think it had around 24 forward speeds. The Az National Guard had some equiped with a front end loader and a backhoe and a hyd. tool kit.

Unimog has been around for at least 30-40 years. Called a forestry vehickle. One I saw deer hunting about 1970 had top speed on I 70 of about 40 MPH. All things are approximate..including spelling...

Jeeps back in the late 40s-50s era could have a 3pt hitch similar to a Ford 9n and a rear pto installed. I haven't seen one in person but have seen alot of pictures of a Jeep pulling a 3pt 2 bottom plow. Jeep even designed a JEEP TRACTOR but it never got into production, that's the story anyway. I did see a 3pt hitch for a Jeep on the auction boards of this site about 2 years ago.

Hey, you guys are missing out big-time, Have you not come across the JCB Fastrac? this has revolutionised farming here in the U.K. along with all the other "fast" tractors as the present economic climate demands ever increasing acreages to maintain margins, then tractors spend ever increasing time on the road hence the need for speed. The Unimog was never very popular in Britain although its sister the MB Trac was, this was an early version of the fast tractor with air brakes, syncromesh gearbox, with commercial style splitter on the stick, and sprung front axle.
