engine hours

How many hours should a well maintained gas engine last before it needs to be rebuilt? I recently bought a 1972 Ford 2000 that has 3700+ a few hours and it runs great without the slightest sign of smoke. I'm not sure it turns a complete revolution before it cranks. There are no signs of a recent rebuild. I guess I just thought 3000 hours would be about it.
Thanks

For a well cared for engine, 7-8000 hours for a gas engine and 10,000 hours for a diesel can be expected unless it's a bad design to start with. Of course, an engine that gets run for short periods of time and/or gets lugged will have a much shorter life. My neighbor has 11,000 hours on his Deere 3020 gas engine and it's never been apart since new. Same guy has a 4020 diesel, and I've rebuilt it twice since new - and it currently has 13,000 hours on it since the last time I tore it down. He also has a newer 120 horse air-cooled Deutz-Allis that's crapped out twice and never got past the 6000 hour mark. My 4000 Ford backhoe with the 172 gas engine has never been apart since new and has 8000 hours on it - but it's close to wipped. My Deere 1010 crawler-loader got 2800 hours on the gas engine before it needed a rebuild - but it's a severely underpowered machine and gets lugged all the time.

The only limiting factor in a Deutz engine lasting under 8000hrs. before needing any kind of major engine overhaul is the ignorance of the owner. If PROPERLY serviced, a Deutz engine will outlast any engine on the market, and use less fuel doing it!

I have a 1968 Case 730 gas with 6000 plus tach hours, uses a quart in about 100 hours with no overhaul. My brother has a 1967 Case 730 gas with over 8000 tach hours with no overhaul. You are right though, we used to think a little over 3000 hours on a gas tractor was about it.

Unleaded gasoline, better oil/filters and dry aircleaners have extended gasoline engine life.

Don't forget the better quality engine oils we have today that weren't available when a lot of these old machines were first designed. Regular maintenance is often the difference between low hour rebuilds and and " I have 8000 hours on 'er and she never misses a beat".
