We recently ( 2 years ago) purchased a new JD 4600 , and just love it! The engine and front the axle are made by Yanmar, the dealer told me that when I asked. JD is the only dealer within 100 miles of where we keep the tractor so it was a logical choice. They have treated us very well during price negotiations and ever since. This tractor is rated at 37hp PTO and has much more power than a IH 340 U, which was about 34 PTO, granted the 340 was a little tired, but It ran very well and I was happy with it until we bought JD!

A few things - 1) Grey market tractors like yanmars are jap machines made for the jap market, imported here used and abused. They are often repainted for sale in the US. Very little parts and service support. These machines are almost never in the 28-30hp size, more often less than 20hp.
2) All the compact tractors sold in the US are made offshore, or have a majority of components made offshore. The john deere/yanmar relationship still exists even though deere is assembling more and more in georgia.
3) since you need 30hp (i agree with that) I would be looking for an older ford 600-800 or perhaps thousand series, potentially with live pto and lots of torque. For brush hogging there is no replacement for displacement, and a ford will out mow a jap diesel any day of the week.

good luck shopping.

I think that Yan-Mar and especially Kubota have finally achieved "Name Brand" status! Certainly they are MORE name brand now than are some Euro-brands like Valtra, Fendt, Styer and Deutz. Kubotas are very good and while their distributors are not quite as common as JOHN DEERE, they are out there! Especially around larger cities where they sell to a lot of mowing contractors and suburbanites. It wouldn't hurt to look at any good late model (<15 years old) used tractor from John Deere, CASEih, MF or New Holland, however. Tractors---unlike most cars, last for as long as 50-60 years! Look at all of the Ford N series tractors! One of them can be up to 65 years old and they STILL bring excellent money!

Some U.S. "big name" companies sold the off-brand stuff. John Deere sold a lot of Yanmar tractors, and they are very reliable. 850, 950, and 1050s are Yanmar painted green with John Deere lettering on them. We sold them when they first came out back in the mid- 70s. International Harvester sold many Mahindra tractors back in the 60s, like the B-275 or the B-414. Was called a "joint-venture." Today, Mahindra is selling tractors under their own name. Some of these trators are absoltely excellent. And, some of the gray-market stuff is crap - especially some of the Chinese stuff I've seen lately.

I thought the B-275 and B-414 were made in the United Kingdom by International Harvestor and imported into the USA. I have known them to be good tractors.

I've read different histories that don't all agree with one another, but they're all close. And, Great Britain and India are closely related, historically. I don't remember when the British gave up rule of India. Mahindra is an old and well established company in India. They were hired to make some U.S. military Jeeps during WWII. They formed a partnership with International Harvester in England in the early 60s. The I.H B-250 was built in Car Hill, England. It was modified a bit, and the tooling was transferred to Mahindra in India, and they made B-275s. And the story goes on from there. Today, they are selling modified B-275s new with the Mahindra name. As I've been told, the new tractors use 85% of the original parts from the B-275s. All the parts I've bought in the last couple of years for my B-275 came over the counter from my local Case-IH dealer, but had the Mahindra name on the package.

i,d look at a massey ferguson 35,135, or ford 600 series just to name a couple. make sure to get live pto!!!!! a lot of gray market tractors do not have. with that much to mow you want at least 30 pto hp, about 38hp engine. i just got me a new kubota L3830HST and have a mf135 diesel, rops, canopy for sale if your anywhere close to northeast tennesee.just stay name brand for parts supply and resale.

For what you would pay for a new tractor, you could buy a good used tractor and one with more power. Like the reply before said get more power than you think you'll need, 'cause you need the power sooner or later. Then it will be to late.

if you only need a 30 hp. tractor, then buy a 40-45 hp. tractor. you will be glad you did. always better to have more power than needed, than to not have enough. a good used big name brand is always better than a unknown brand.

The bottom line is-- You really do get what you pay for! Some "brands" are really hard to get replacement part for and it takes nearly 3 months to arrive from the country of origin. Most of the small sales lots merely sell tractors, you must find your own parts outlet. Although somewhat risky for the purchaser, buying a good used big name tractor is the best option.
