Chevy 8.1 gasser for hauler?

I know that this is a pretty minor problem in view of some of the other posts (Gary in TX; I pray and hope that you and your Father can share more of life together.), but I'm just curious as to your thoughts.
I've been considering trading my 3/4 ton Chevy with 6.0 liter for a Avalanche 3/4 ton with 8.1 Vortex to be used as a hauler. When I look back on the milage of my pickup, I can't believe that it could be much worse with the 8.1...but maybe?
Has anyone out there had experience using the big block for towing regarding milage or problems? I know diesel would be the logical choice, but I still remember all the troubles I had years ago with my 6.2's. Driving the 8.1 feels like a vehicle with a big electric motor...it justs moves without effort. But, I'm sure there's a reason for that 37 gallon gas tank.
Thanks!

My wife has a 2500HD Crew Cab, 8.1 Vortec, 4x4, 5 spd Allison that has 6000 miles on it and is getting 12-13MPG driving to work and general cruising. It drops to 9-10 with a 10,000# trailer load. You (we) may not need all that horsepower, but it sure is fun knowing it is there if you need it.

I own a 2003,2500 HD crew cab, 8.1 5 speed auto, 3.73 gears, with long box (34 gallon tank), less than a year. I have over 27,000 miles on it and just love driving the truck.

Empty:
The best I ever get is 17 mpg on freeway at 65mph long trips. Driving Hiway 101 on the west coast, I get about 14.5. Running around town I'm lucky to get 10 mpg.

Best fuel economy is acheived on long trips. Where you shut the engine off just long enough to fill it up. A week of short runs, 8 to 10 miles at a time will scare you at the gas pump.

Towing:
Just came back from vacation in Death Vally towing a 26E Mallard(16,000CGVW). Mileage ranged from 8 to 10.5. Getting 10.5 requires a lot of effort to conserve and good road. I get 8.5 to 9 mpg with over drive locked out and cruise set at 65. Best fuel mileage acheived in overdrive, under 60 mph.

I really dont think a diesel stands a chance of keeping up with or out running the 8.1, up a 6% to 9% hill or any hill! The "torque/RPM range of the gas engine allows you be at least one gear lower then the diesel.

Gas engine 4500 rpm 2nd gear 60 mph. The Diesel has to shift to 4th gear to reach 60mhp @ 2500rpm. The diesel is turning 3200 rpm at 55mph in third gear. Assuming vehicles using 3.73 final drive and 5 spd Allison transmission. I think wide open throttle shifts are just below 5,000 rpm for the 8.1.

I have a freind that has a 6.0 with 4:10 gears that I tow with. When he gets about 7 to 8 MPG towing, I get over 9 mpg.

From reading the article, I beleive my 8.1 is running slightly stronger. Than the vehicle they tested.

More than my 2 cents, sorry.. Emery

What octane gas are you running in your big block ? Is it possible to run regular in them or do they take high octane ?

I have a 2003 Chevy 2500HD regular cab with duramax diesel and the six speed. I have 15000 miles on it. Last week I was pulling loaded 14000 lb, fertilizer spreaders with it and I averaged 18 MPG. On the highway empty I average 22 MPG. I believe it will out pull the gasser any day. I look at it like comparing a gas tractor with a diesel one, you would not want to own a 300 hp gas powered 4x4 tractor! Granted the diesel engine costs more but with the milage and diesel fuel averaging 15 to 20 cents less in my area it will pay for it self. also they have been retaining their value at trade in time. With these new diesels they have finally got them right and they in no way compare to the old troublesome 6.2s.

For a Diesel, at about $6,000 more and only 25% better mileage, you will have to go thru 22,500 gal of fuel to break even. That doesn't include the injector / pump service. I do like diesel but it is for the power, torque and some resale. not the fuel savings.

I have a 2002 2500 HD extended cab. It has the Allison 5 speed automatic and 3.73 gears
Empty on the highway I get about 13 mpg when driving reasonably. I pull a small 5th wheel probably about 7000 lb and I can get 10 mpg at about 65 mph. It has remarkable power. It usually stays locked in OD even up fair grades pulling the camper. It is hard to drive the speed limit though.

How much of the time are you going to be hauling ? And did you 6.0 pull what you needed to or not ? My point being if your 6.0 pulled what you needed and only used very little it will get beter mileage empty just running around than the 8.1 Those large engines just don't care if they are pulling or not same mpg all the time 7-8

Thanks Mike;
If I was strictly using common sense, I would keep what I had. Over the past 2 years it's figured out to 12+ mpg for an average in all of my driving. Hauling tractors amounts to a small percentage of overall use; but I was considering the 8.1 for my Wife to use with her travel trailer going to Chihuahua shows! Wow!...it takes a big block to haul small dogs! Average milage is what I was curious about. Is that 7-8 for real?

I have not ran any of the new fuel injected big blocks but there is no evidence that they are any better than the old ones. Right now I have a 1996 Dodge with a 360 gas 4x4 3/4 ton ext. cab and my mileage is right where yours is 12-13 my lowest was 7.5 pulling a 25ft.tandem dual gooseneck with a 6000 to 7000 lb tractor on it. I dream of one with a 5.9 cummins at times but I don't pull trailer much and reality sets in when I cost it out and add extra for more engine oil capacity and more expensive filters and fuel filters. I think you would only come out ahead if you mainly used for pulling. I'm not that old but I remember driving my uncle's 1951 chevy truck this had a large 20 ft. dump grain bed and only had a SMALL 6 CYL. GAS 250ci ? got the job done ran fine I checked the gas mileage once but I forget what it was.I think the same as a pickup this was around 1979 or 1980 ? MPG has not come very far at all in pick up trucks.

1500HD crew cab with 6.0L, 4 speed auto & 3.73 . Average 12.5mpg US over the past 20,000 miles with mixed driving and occassional trailer hauling.

I just got an 8.1 with the 6spd. When I say just got it I'm talking monday. So I am still breaking the motor in. Filled up last night got 12.1 mpg on 1st tank. I'm sure that I could do better if I wasn't having so much fun with that 6spd. Torque is better than some diesels and the get up and go of a gas for 6,000 less makes sense to me. So far I love it.

Thanks for being honest Everytime there is a gas or diesel mileage ? Theres a bunch of morons who get 35-40% better milage than the manufacturers advertise.

I own a 2001 K-3500 Chevy. It is equipped with the 8.1, 6 spd manual trans., and 4.11 rear gears. I now have 28,000 miles on it, the only trouble it ever gave was when the crank sensor failed, and the truck would not start. That was fixed under warranty, no more problems. This truck pulls like no other I ever owned, didn't complain one little bit when I hauled an 8,000# tractor through the mountains west of Denver, Co. Fuel mileage is not great, but is not bad either, around 12 to 14 normal driving, sometimes better. The worst it ever did was around 8 mpg, on the trip through the mountains. I am sure that the fuel mileage would be much better with the 3.73 rear gears.
Go for the 8.1, the diesels are way overpriced.

Wished I could say the same about my 2001 3/4t with the allison trany. Driving back and forth to work I was lucky to get 8. I took it on a road trip not pulling anything and I got about 10.5. Had to use cruise or I would have had red lights behind me. Does have the power, hopefully Sunday I'll test it out with a load on it.

The guy I work with bought a 2001 1/2 extended cab with the 6.0 and he claims he gets 16 or better. My 97 1/2 with 350 vortec would get 18 hwy. With gas prices I wished I had my 97 back.

Do you recall your GVW at the time? Remember in what gear and at what speed you pulled Eisenhower? Just curious AND I am looking for a reason NOT to buy another diesel! Thanks.

It allready sounds like you know the best reason of all. In these light duty trucks the engine choices are limited to ones not built very good, they cheapen them up lighten them up to get in a small truck. An engine running 22:1 compression needs to be built good to hold up.

No, I never did weigh after I loaded, but I estimate the weight right around 20,000#. I was in third gear going up Eisenhower, running right along with the big rigs. I could have used fourth gear, it was pulling o.k., but the truck just seemed to be more comfortable with third. I stayed in the same gear going down as I used going up. A jake brake would be a real nice option.
