alternator problem

I know the answere is in here somewhere but if y'all will humor me I would appreciate it (I have read all the current post and articles). I was just looking at a recently rebuilt Ford 601. It had been 12v for years but got a new and different alternator during the overhaul (I know not why). Problem know is the battery gets weak while sitting (new battery-battery was replaced as this was thought to be a battery problem).
Here is what I know. It is a delco alternator with a main lug labled "Battery" and two connections at the top Labled "1" and "2". The main lug is wired through an amp meter to the battery. "2" is jumpered over to "battery". "1" is tied to "2" with a resistor (It is not a diode - I don't know the value as I forget the color codes but I can get if needed).
Can this arrangement work and could it be the source of battery drainage (I did not have a volt meter with me but I did think the resistor fetl slightly warm).
I can go back tothe tractor to get more info.
Suggestions appreciated.

Matthew - It's the resistor that's causing your problem. Depending on it's value it's drawing about 0.2 amps whenever the battery is connected and the alternator is stopped. That's enough to drain down a full battery after a few days.

Easiest fix is to disconnect the resistor from the #2 terminal. Instead feed the resistor directly from the hot (ign switch side) of the coil.

I.e. wiring should be: coil "+" {to} resistor {to} alternator #1. (And leave BAT and #2 jumpered together at the alternator.)

The alternator will still charge and your battery should now stay up!
