Putting in my B&W turnoverball hitch in 04 F350 supercab Longbox. My choices are 46" and 49" from back of box. Both will have the ball coming out ahead of the axle, roughly 3" and 6" ahead which is best? I'm leaning to the 49 which is farther frontwards beacause there is so much more truck out front. This my 4th time and all the others have been ahead of axle.

If you go to the reese hitch website they have the distance for each individual truck brand/ model to obtain the best handling and weight distribution.

Just put a B&W in my 2000 F-350 extended cab dually this spring. I put it at the 46 inch mark for several reasons. Pulling the goosenecks it was going to be very close with the talegate to the front of the trailer when hooking up if I went with the 49 spot. If you are hooking up at an angle instead of streight on this becomes a worse problem. Be sure you check this before putting the ball in. Also with the dual wheel configeration on my truck I wanted more of the weight to the rear for the 4 tires to hold than the two front tires.

I am happy with the 46 inch set up on my truck and dont really think I would have liked it as much on the 49 set up.

Good luck, it is a great ball system....

Hi tom,

Something to consider moving the pin forward, is the F350 has approx 4800lbs on the fornt axle being empty. Maximum spring weight is 5200lbs or 6000lbs if you installed the "X" springs.

The front tires capicity is 6080lbs so your pushing about 90% of maximum tire weight empty and as you near maximum weight rating, noticable tire ware accelerates.

If you read several mfg. install instructions, you will see coments that from axle center line, pin weight shifts 1% average either 4" ahead or behind axle center line. However real world numbers say nothing behind axle center line as trailer handling is noticeable different.

Then consider trailer width as 1/2 the width needs to clear the cab on a 90º turn. If your going to use a 102" wide trailer, this becomes important.

I put one of those in my 01 chevy, seems like it was located either 6 or 8 inches ahead of the axle. I would also lean towards the longer measurment on yours, I think it would distribute the weight better, and give you a better ride.
