loader question

I have a Massey Furgesson 399 90 model 95 pto hp with a mf 838 loader. It has an 8 ft bucket. I was lifting some gravel and dirt, I had a full bucket and it lifted it but it seemed to struggle with it. It made a whining noise and just barely lifted the bucket when it was full. I wanted to know if this was normal or if I had a loader problem. I am not sure how much an 8 ft bucket full of gravel and dirt would weigh, or if it should be able to lift it easily. Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

Sand, gravel, etc. weighs about 3000 pounds per cubic yard. Your bucket is probably about 1/2 to 3/4 cubic yard unless it is a snow bucket in which case it might be a yard or yard and a quarter. You should be able to fill a 1/2 to 3/4 yard bucket or even a full yarder as full as you like and be OK, except that if you crowd it too hard into the pile, it will hydraulically stall when you try to lift it. If it is any kind of decent brand of loader at all and in any kind of decent shape that shouldn't hurt it as far as damaging anything. If it has trouble lifting, it could be low on fluid or bad fluid overdue for a change, a plugged filter, bad seals in the lift cylinders, or a worn control valve or the pump. Check the easy stuff (fluid, filter) first. Good luck on that.

Hi Todd,

I agree with the others; that outfit should have no trouble at all lifting that load, although an 8 ft bucket full of gravel will be heavy.

Don't 'spose that filter needs looking at, do you?

Just guessing,

Allan

Todd

Your tractor and loader is not made to lift a full bucket of dirt and sand. When moving dirt and sand only move half buckets otherwise you risk bending up the loader and breaking the tractors front end. Don't know how your loader is mounted but if it is a mid mount (NO bracing to the rear wheels) you also risk breaking the tractor in half right next to the aft mounting point on the tractor. I have a heavy duty loader with only a 7' bucket on a 95hp tractor and will not load the bucket over 3/4 full with dirt or gravel.

Good luck
Merle

I don't agree.

I have an Oliver 1650G with a Schwartz 1610 loader and 8' bucket. I've hoisted thousands of full bucket loads of gravel and even wet sand which is heavier than gravel. I'll admit it's hard on the equipment but she gets the job done.

Did you know that a bucket load of dry sand is heavier than a bucket full of wet sand?

Hi Van,

Hmmmm. Boy! It sure didn't seem that way when I was on the power end of that darned irrigation shovel all those years. :>)

Mornin' Ron,

I agree. While I'm not familiar with his outfit, seems like something is wrong. That's a fair sized tractor/loader.

I have a 40 year old Farmhand w/8' bucket mounted on a 50 year old Farmall H.

The thing will lift until I tell it to stop.

An 8' bucket might hold a yard or so of gravel which would weigh something like 2,500 lb. Far smasller tractors than yours can easily lift that load.

Your Operator's Manaul should have instructions on how to set and bypass/relief valves for proper loader operation. But the first thing to check is for proper hydraulic fluid level. All leaks, no matter how small, must be corrected and the fluid level maintained per the book. Fluid in the tractor must look and smell like the fluid in the jug. If it does not, drain and replace all of it. The hydraulic system filter must also be replaced.

I really appreciate all of your help.I will change the fluid and filter and try that. I just purchased the tractor and was not sure what the capacity was.
Thanks,
Todd Smith
