I recently cranked my grandfathers tractor which has been setting for a couple of years. Instead of black smoke it is blowing white smoke from the exhaust. I have not changed the fuel. It cranked very easy. Could this be serious problems.

Somebody missed something here.

Smoke:

Black: Raw diesel fuel Usually caused by too rich a pump setting; putting more in the cylinder than can effectively explode; dirty injector not misting fuel so that it can be burned readily.

Blue: Engine oil burning; bad rings

White: Condensation/water Cold engine

Take it out and run it awhile and get it hot. You said that you already started it; don't know why you are getting these starting problem responses.

If the diesel had water in it from sitting, your fuel filters are designed to remove and hold that.

I'd change them as soon as you can as you never know what's in there. Additionally, if it has been sitting, the fuel tank could have some accumulated rust in it which will eventually show up in the filters. If you have to change them a couple of times don't be alarmed.

Symptoms of clogged filter are poor high end response; cutting out; loss of power; but idles ok.

Right on the money! Sometimes you'll see a tractor running with the wrong or no thermostat blow white smoke from being too cold even after the engine has been run for hours.

White exhaust while cranking is normal. It's merely an indication the fuel system and injectors are working OK (the white "smoke" is unburned fuel...)

Several reasons the motor won't start: - Engine is cranking too slow. - Compression is low (worn/stuck rings; worn, badly adjusted or stuck valves; cylinder walls dry from sitting so long, etc.) - Glow plugs not working. You don't mention model tractor, but if it has glow plugs (or a manifold pre-heater) and they're not working it won't start cold.

Do you have another tractor to pull this one with? Often pulling in gear will spin the diesel fast enough to start it when all the starter can do is make white smoke.

As you pointed out he did not mention what tractor it is. This is why I caution DO NOT PULL START ! because if it is a JD with a hyd. high and low and maybe some other brands I'm not familar with you can do serious damage to the drive train if pull started.

Hi Rick,

If it's been sitting that long I would go work the tractor then see what color you get. White smoke at running temperature means low compression but in your case it could be stuck rings from setting so long.

Be sure to drain the water out of the fuel filter. If the fuel has no black slime or alot of water, then it would not bother me to use it.

Hi Rick,

Found a diesel troubleshooting chart that I thought might be of interest to you.

At the bottom of the page describes the smoke colors and what they mean.

I Read the chart seem I've seen it before. Funny, you look at the spreadsheet and temp isn't mentioned as a cause yet you go to the dialogue and the first thing they say is

Black unburned fuel
White cold engine
Blue oil burning

Leaves you wondering about who wrote what.
