I know that someone will chime in here and tell me that I am full of it but this is real, so take it how you want it. I just heard a news story on the radio thismorning that a 3 year old was killed when he tried to jump onto a moving tractor at an area farm. This sort of stuff scares the b'jesus out of me. My 3 year old daughter likes to ride on the lawn mower (very slow, and not while mowing) but is scared to death of the big tractors. I'm just afraid that some day she will get the urge to get on the big one and run up to me. I tell her all the time to NEVER go up to any moving thing (cars, tractors etc) and she listens pretty well. Please be careful when the kids are around, and say a prayer for the man that was running the tractor that killed this litte boy. I'm sure he could use it.

Close to 40 years ago I was driving a '52 JD A back to the field with a flat rack wagon in tow. Loading out sod. Mike was riding the RH fender when the RH wheel walked off the axle. How we never noticed it coming I do not know. When the axle went into the muck, we stopped rather abruptly. Mike was pitched forward over the pulley, hit the ground running & didn't stop to look back till some distance was between us. I don't recall leaving the seat, just yanked that clutch back. No injuries, no damage, just a little lost time & a pointed reminder to check out your equipment & no seat = no rider.

Here is a thought. My grandkids (who live in Virginia) look forward to visting Grandpa in So. Minnesota every summer, so they can ride the old tractors. JD 50-A, 55-50, 56-60. We have rules. Get the lawn chairs out in front of the house. Another adult or 2 present. Stay in the lawn chairs until it's your turn to ride. They sit between my legs on the seat for their ride. I use a belt around their chest and my waist, and a bunge strap around both of us to the seat. Think SAFETY. They love it.

Good advice, and a voice for farm safety. Let me add a tragic story to the thread. When I was living in Central Texas during the early 80's. The family that was working my neighbor's farm lost thier five year old son. He was discing with an open cab JD 4020, and was discing near the fence line. There was a big tree with limbs protruding into the field. When he went under the tree, he managed to not get hit by the limb, but his five year old son did get hit and knocked off the tractor in front of the disc. I understand that the boy lived almost five hours. This is one of the things that I've done myself many times. Needless to say I don't practice this anymore and am a little more careful when giving rides on equipment that is designed for only the operator to sit on.

Howdy Jim, we too had a family friend who was crossing a ditch with his favorite grandson, the boy fell forward and under the rear wheel. Old Mike was never the same, in fact I think it hurried him along too.Dan in AB

My 5-year-old nephew ran up behind the tractor his dad was on, on a grade and the brakes didn't hold. He died in my sister's arms on the way to the hospital. Keep the little ones away from the machinery.
