I advertised a tractor and received an overseas response(although other than the wording and sentence structure you'd have a hard tine telling it was overseas). The responder offered to buy the tractor sight unseen and send a cashier's check for more than the amount, which I was to remit the shipping amount to an overseas shipper by Western Union. They even offered $300 for my mileage(40 miles) to the nearest Western Union. I didn't think it was quite right, but was willing to give the benefit of the doubt as long as I got my $2500 which I asked for the tractor. I received a certified check by registered mail and since it is a weekend I have not taken it to the bank. I have no intention of cashing it. First thing I will tell the bank I think it's a scam and have them turn it over to the FBI. Then I will go to the post office since they used the postal system and the Post Office has their own inspector system which is if anaything a little better than the FBI at scams. Third, I have already faxed copies of all communications to the Iowa state attorney general's office. And last, I'm in the process of contacting Interpol about it. Have I forgotten anything?

A buddy of mine got ripped of exactly like that
only he cashed the check he turned out having to pay the bank 2,000 dollars for the bum check and when he turned it over to the police they said he may never get his cash back and if he does it will be at least five years before it happens

yeah, do as others say. what I did was add to top of my web page that I am selling tractor, was to put "warning will not ship over sea, no over sea buyers, USA buyers only." after I did that have not got any more over sea scams..

Steveii,
Yep. OK. The number of times I have had to ask if someone would consider sending to UK, when they put "ship within US only" and they have said yes far outweighs those who will not. If I really want it, I get it shipped to a third party first, but we are talking low value items mainly. I would be very put out if we could not find a way to do a deal if I wanted a tractor though. It is just that these scammers queer the patch for the genuine bidders. A genuine overseas purchaser would not try to rush you into anything. They would wait while you make sure the funds are cleared AND genuine. They, of course, just need to watch out for the unscrupulous sellers who would take their money and not deliver the goods!

I do not think that is what I would have done. I think I would have let the reply go unanswered. I do not condem your efforts and hope that the evidence will lead to the catching of these crooks.

Your only mistake, if you have made any, may be that these muppets have your addy. Better just to ignore them.

Randy, you must be new here on the forum. If you go into the archives and search out "SCAMS" you'll get enough reading to last you a lifetime. Just delete it and wait for something that sounds a little more legitimate.

Randy,

Since you haven't lost any money, it's unlikely that the local or federal authorities will investigate. The scammer hasn't actually committed a crime yet, unless you can prove his intent. Also, since the scammer is outside of the country, it becomes an international matter, and it's hardly worth anyone's time for a few thousand bucks. (Here in Michigan, a law firm lost over a million dollars when an employee embezzled their trust fund to pay a scammer.) The sheer volume of these scams means that only the most egregious are ever investigated.

Good luck, I hope I'm wrong and they put the guy in jail.

The Secret Service has jurisdiction in these cases. See the link below.

Randy, its a scam. No doubt in my mind. I have had same scam tried on me many times. I even led them on as to make them pay Fed Express overnight to send me check, eats up about 50 bucks of their resourses. All they want is you to send balance of say 2 or 3K to them. they have no ineterst in machine. Have to say the checks do look legit but are not worth the paper they are written on. Seems most come from Lagos, Nigeria. Shame is some fall for it every day.

When I read posts like yours, it's a pretty scarey thing. I've also read posts by other's who've purchased via "on-line" adds, and been taken. I guess it's "beware", and that's too bad. I, like most people here am honest. It's too bad that there are people out there that are preditors looking to take advantage of others. I have no sympathy for those types when caught - let them become fertilizer in someone's corn field as far as I'm concerned.

Thanks for the incentive to buy local where can hand over cash and take with.

Mark, IN.

Just a little followup-I checked the website at the Iowa attorney general"s office--www.state.ia.us/government/ag/consumer/advisories/Nigeria and found a good summary of how this scam works. Also it has a link to the Secret Service website where this scam is being worked on. If you HAVE been taken in by this they want to know about it. Be careful.
