How HOT should a small engine run?

A small 5-8 hp industrial air cooled (painted red) Briggs engine runs a large parking lot type blower similar to the lil wonder blower. The top mounted fuel tank has a rubber fuel line running underneath and next to the head. After running for 15 minutes it begins to sputter and seems to choke itself out of gas. Service has just replaced the head gasket, and points, and condenser thinking it would fix the problem. It used to happen after 5 minutes and it does take a little longer but is still there. When it sputters it will belch black smoke now and then like it is being choked. I noticed then when it does sputter the block seems too hot, You can't touch the metal choke lever for more than a second without burning yourself. Letting it stand for a few minutes and it will start and run good again but does not take long before the sputtering starts again. Running that hot, could the gas be vaporizing in the fuel line before it gets to the carb? Have I told you enough? What is going here? What should I try next?

I am a small engine mech. the air cooled engines run about 750 all of you that said you use mobile 1 your right on the money normal oil starts to break down at about 525 and snth oil doesnt break down at all. as far as your problem goes its in the spark you either got a bad coil witch starts to short out when hot or points are to close together. hope you found your problem allready.m allso an electrician.

Hi Farmer,

I had one this past winter that was doing the exact same thing; the same symptoms exactly down to the black smoke.

This one turned out to be a bad fuel line. It was disintegrating from the inside out and plugging up the filter to a degree. I'd let it set for a little while and the thing would then run again until she plugged up again.

That thing drove me nuts till I replaced that line.

The line seemed plumb okay too; the only thing that pointed me in that direction was that I was getting some black soot-like looking stuff in the filter from that line. It had been on there since the engine was new in ’89 or so.

Go figure,

Allan

When thy put new points in it did they get them set right, out of time can cause to run hot. Is the coil set at the right gap, again, out of time can run hot. did you replace fuel line? It could have come apart in the line. As Ron said, check cap vent. You could be running lean in the carb, that will also cause heat.

When I first read your problem, I immediately thought of vapor lock with the gas line too close to the head. Ron and Rays thoughts seem right in line with how you are describing the problem. Had a church bus one time vapor locking, got it all the way from Lexington KY, to Mich with some tin foil wrap that we built a little shield out of. My buddies always joke about an engine only needing three things to run...
Spark, fuel, compression.
Sounds easy, getting all three at exactly the right time, thats the hard part.
Good luck,
Rick

If by "sputter" you mean the governor is cycling, remove the gas cap and see if that helps. If so, the vent in the cap is clogged.

check the cooling fins under the sheet metal engine covers. They are most likely blocked and preventing the air moved by the fly wheel fins to cool the engine. If it still runs hot, replace oil with synthetic oil, I found that really helps a small engine run cooler. Air cooled engines are really, "oil cooled"

Great idea and it's a proven fact that due to the better friction reducing capabilities of syn oils, engines using them run cooler; amount depends of course, on each application.

I run Mobil 1 15w-50 in all my air cooled engines. Runs all season (lawn mowers) and is still honey colored when finished.

This is probably NOT the answer to your question, but may shed a little light. I have a B&S 8hp vertical shaft on a tow behind mower. From the factory, the rubber fuel line ran right over the muffler - factory had added a metal tubing sheath over that part of fuel line. Before I ran it the first time, I found a way to provide some separation between muffler and fuel line, by plastic wire tieing it away from muffler. That seemed to be courting disaster. I would check very carefully the routing of fuel line. Have you tried running it with a remotely located fuel tank?
