Allis B or Farmall A?

Hey all, I have been looking for a project to do this winter and have been searching the ads in the newspaper for a couple of weeks. There is an Allis Chalmers model B for $1250 and a Farmall model A for $1275, both running, and wondering which I should consider. It looks like that they have about the same power and are about the same size, however I am just assuming. I have called the owners and gotten some info on each one.

From what I am told the AC has new rear tires, good paint, 6 volt with starter, and is not quite an hour away.

The Farmall I am told has good front tires, ok rear tires, 12 volt conversion with starter, but it needs paint and the owner said it has begun to run only with the choke out like it has a carb problem. It is no more than 2 hours away.

Do these sound like good prices? If so, which should I choose because I only want one. Thanks for the help.

I pick the A, because it has a 4 speed tranny, and has more low end torque that a Allis B. I HAD both at the same time, i still have the A. :>)

If you are looking for a vote, I pick the Farmall A. Especially if it is a super a. Reason being, that our family owned one when i was growing up. We had a cub first. I still don"t care for cubs, but the super a is one i would like to own today, if getting another small tractor.

Kevin: Both prices sound reasonable, if not exactly cheap. The Farmall has 4 speeds forward, which is a plus, and both have about the same horsepower. Don"t let the 12-volt conversion scare you--there"s less than a dozen wires on the entire tractor and reams of advice availible (here and elsewhere) about troubleshooting the system.

Allis B could have hyd. It would be built into the PTO thing. High pressure, single action. Prices seem a little high to me unless they are rebuilt. I thing you would like any tractor with a 3 point much better.

I already work an 8n which has the 3 point and don't have a need for another work tractor.

I would say the Allis, more Allis around than Farmall A, transmission is 3 speeds foward in both, depending on age of Allis could have hydrolics and I WOULD NEVER CONSIDER a tractor that had a 12 volt conversion, you read all the post and see all the trouble people have with them, the most common problem on any make or model tractor on this board, either one if in good condition will start right off with the 6 volt system and 12 volt light are not any brighter than 6 volt ones as some argue for conversion

Kevin, both the Allis "B" and the Farmall "A" are nice project tractors. not knowing the condition of either tractor, I would say that probably if you need replacement parts that the Farmall "A" would have a better parts supply. They have just about the same HP, but while the Allis may have 1 or 2 more HP, the Farmall "A" has better gear selection since it is a 4 speed as opposed to a 3 speed in the Allis "B" The Farmall "A" as you know is an offset configuration which is different from the Allis but makes it a great tractor for cultivating as well as snow removal. Neither have hydraulics unless it woulld be a super "A". New rear tires are approximately $115.00 each plus mounting. Fronts are approximately $40.00 each plus mounting, and both the Allis "B" and the Farmall "A" take the same size tires. I think ultimately it comes down to what you think you would be most comfortable with. As to the carburetor needing choked to stay running, that is a cheap fix if thats all it is, and I cant see that symptom being anything other than the carb, or fuel restriction. The prices you state are reasonable for either tractor providing they both have strong engines, and the sheet metal is in decent shape. Needing a paint job is the least of your problems.

The Allis is a lot more tractor than the Farmall power and work wise. Sounds like more for your money condition wise too. I do have to say that the prices you showed are a little high unless the tractors are in real nice shape.

WOW, you must have had a near DEAD A, because i had my A, and my Allis B in the same field at the same time, and i'm hear to tell you, the A was the winner of those two!! Both tractors were in "great" shape too!!

BTW, i had my JD "M" in that field too :>)
