I"m about to start working on an old John Deere 730 diesel. I have been told by someone else who tried to start it that they couldn"t get it to start. I haven"t tried it personally yet.

First off, how are the batteries suppose to be connected? I took the old one"s out and forgot if they were connected in series (+ & - of the batteries connected together) or parallel?

Second, what should I look for? I mean I thought a diesel was pretty simple. I don"t know for certain the year yet. Are there glow plugs on this? I don"t even know where to begin.

the quickest and easiest way ive found somedays is just to spray a splint second burst of ether in the intake on the engine then either find a hill to pop start it or better yet have a truck or another tractor pull you put the tranny in the highest gear and the throttle at half. if it starts for a second on ether but dies keep pulling but after 100 yards if there is no white smoke at all coming from the exhaust then you have a fuel delivery problem and i would hook the batterys in series gives you a better cranking speed by far hook the hot wire to the pos of one battery then connect the neg side of the bat to the pos side of the other on and put the ground cable to the neg side of the batt. good luck you should also buy a repair manual for this tractor also it comes in handy!
