Howdy folks,

Just wanted to start off by saying I'm sorry for posting that frustrated post. I didn't mean to vent my anger in front of you all. It's been a very rough week. Been lookin for work for four months now and haven't found any. Well, none in my area of expertise. If nothing shows soon I'll just have to look at other jobs. I don't mind it so much but I have people I care about who'd be mighty disappointed to see me not get the job I worked so hard to get a degree in. That said, I wanted to ask you all about our JD A. It's also been a source of frustration. It doesn't want to run under load. It back fires through the carb, quits, and won't hardly start after. The backfiring is a sort of puffing sound in the carb. No cracking sound thru the muffler. We've got a new mag (timed right), the carb had been set and it was running good until we stopped to fix the picker, and it has newly ground and seated valves (had been burned). I know you all can help and I appreciate it. God bless.

Backfiring throught the carburetor means that the engine is firing with an intake valve open. Are you 100% sure that the timing is correct? Either the timing is off, or you have a valve problem. If the timing is correct, then one or both intakes valve are not properly seating. You may have a wrong valve adjustment, or a bad valve job. Was it done by a reputable machine shop?

Think many of us can relate to you on both counts. Couple years back, wife lost her job in nursing. With a BS in Education, and an Associates in nursing, and a RN, she was almost two years getting another job. Sometimes the breaks are hard to come by, sometimes not your fault. As far as the tractor, follow the suggestions tendered by the fellows here. they're good things to check. We had one 'bout drove us crazy, JD trator would only miss under load. finally tracked down to a crack in the insulation of a spark plug wire within the metal tube they run thru. Would only short out under load conditions, otherwise ran fine....

Howdy again,

Thanks for the suggestions so far. I'll check on the valves and such on monday. I'm a Christian so no work's gonna happen on it today. I wanted to add to the story the way this thing acted yesterday. When we got the head back from havin the valves ground and seated and had put it back together the tractor was still not pullin right. I adjusted the load needle on the carb and it ran just fine for some reason. The weird part is this. We took it to the field and picked six rounds just fine. The picker's slip clutch needed work so we came to the house and fixed it. Well, oddly enough when we went back the problem started again. It was odd since we never touched the tractor, just the picker. Well, thanks again for the help and if any more ideas pop up I'd appreciate those too. God bless.

Hi,

Is this the same old A that you were trying to run on diesel?

Allan,

Yep, it's the same one. The diesel didn't hurt it at all. In fact, she pulled better with it than gas. I'm guessin that the knockin sound was what made grandad adjust the valves too tight. They were burned but we had that fixed.

Puffing through the carb? I would say you have an intake valve that's not right. adjust the valves one more time. and good luck no your job search.

Thanks for the suggestion. I wasn't there at the time but dad said he set the clearance twice according to the book just to make sure. We'll check again though and see. Thanks.
