How do you guys take care of your trailer batteries? Take them out for the winter if you aren't planning on using the trailer much? Charge them once in a while? Just wondering how to make it last and not be dead when I want to use the trailer.

Harbor Freight sells a battery tender for about $10. I put it in my trailer and hook it up to the battery. The battery stays fresh and ready whenever I take my trailer out. All I need to do is keep it plugged up when I am not using it. By the way, the new sealed batteries do not care if they are sitting on the floor or not. They will not go bad sitting on concrete.

My pop always told me to bring them into the cellar and set them on a board, not directly on the concrete, for some reason the cold concrete sucks the life right out of them.

old wives tale that is true Re: trailer battery in reply to Jim K, 10-25-2004 18:36:12
That old wives tale is true. A battery sitting on a "cold" floor but has warm air around it is in trouble. Each battery plate is warmer at the top than at the bottom. A battery is more active and has a higher voltage when warm than cold. Now the warm tops and cool bottom of the plates have a slightly different voltage potential and wee bit of current will flow. So yes, in a few weeks or months that battery will be discharged. Best to remove the batteries and clean up the terminals, cables and the tray below. Lead acid batteries stored or used at temps of 77F plus suffer shortened life by the way.

I agree that all batteries discharge over a period of time but don't think much of the temperature differential theory since the plates are surrounded with a liquid.

Yup, I have always sat my batteries on wood from the 50's to this day but I am not sure it is necessary any more, just habit.

My Dad said the same. It was true 40 years ago but today the cases do not leak or bleed off current. Visit this website for answers.

Mine never seems to stop rolling. Winter is auction season for me. Trailer gets about as much use in winter as summer..... John
