We are a friendly, information sharing group of people here on yesterdaystractors.com, and while we have our disagreements and varied viewpoints, we for the most part treat others with respect and consideration. For Francis Robinson to resort to name calling and ridiculing in his article appearing on the home page is uncalled for and amateurish. Each of us have our own position of what brand, type, weight, of motor oil to use. It is my right to use any oil I choose just as it is his. I will not fault him for using what he prefers because it is his money, equipment, and time. When you author an article one must at least portend to have an objective viewpoint if they desire to be taken seriously. This is entirely different from posting a reply to an inquiry. I am also disappointed in the YT administrator for publishing such an article. I will continue to participate in the forums if I feel I can contribute usefull and accurate information to posted inquiries. When a post requests one's opinion they should be allowed to reply without being ridiculed. I may not like or even condone someone's way of doing things or saying them, but I will stand along side them to protect thier right to; if thier action is legal and moral

Ray, you go ahead and use any kind of oil you like. Mr. Robinson's article only suggest you use the best of whatever you select and I don't see how anyone can take offense in that.

I have run a lube oil testing lab and have also been involved in lubricant production for over 20 years. The article was down to earth and pretty well written. Some of the comments I read about fuels and lubes on this site though are so far from the truth that it makes me wonder where these people get their info.

Go into Wally World, Auto Zone or most any auto parts store and get a load of the wall full of different oils.

Sorta like going into the fishing store and looking at all the lures, or grocery store and count the different types of cereals.

I use 2. 1 syn and 1 OTR truck, usually mixed to some degree in everything.

Politics..... religion..... .oil..... ..

I sure don't know where you are coming from. I read the article and found it informative, accurate and amusing. I own and operate numerous pieces of construction equipment, farm tractors, six class 8 Mack trucks and do all my own repair work short of injectors and pumps. Most of this equipment is thirty to fifty years old. I have been using 15w40 diesel engine oil in everything, including the lawn mowers, for the past twenty five years and have not yet had any engine problems related to lubrication. I do not know the author of the article but do know that he and the others that take the time to contribute to this site help make it a very enjoyable place to spend the evening.

Ray, Did we read the same article? I read it and found it to be quite informative to say the least. While the author used some unique ways to get the readers attention, it certainly falls short of being disrespectful. If it took a literary board upside my head to get my attention, then I"d say the author was only doing his job while making his point. He sure enlightned me on a few obscure facts.

Ray, Is this a joke? Or a Halloween prank?? Please tell us it is. Otherwise, you might try getting a hobby or a pair of undies one size larger, cause it sounds like yours are too tight. Steve

I think the most important thing in article is We did the best we could at the time with what we had to work with. If change makes it better or easier then do it. Todays products are better than in the 50,s

Thank you. I read it. He does take a couple of good humored potshots but overall he's pretty mild. I do agree with him so maybe I'm not offended but one who is a "purist" might be.

End result is that it's your equipment and he probably doesn't much care what you use and you do have an agreement where he says that "oil is cheap and parts and labor are not". So...the purist is working on that philosophy also.

I just read the article and I can't say that I found it offensive in the least. Yes he does poke a bit of fun at the "Purist" but nothing that is insulting. He does not state his qualifications so as far as I'm concerned I will take his advice just as he reccomends as an average with the opinions expessed by others.

I myself have a working tractor it looks like a rat but it does what I need most times, I use name brand modern lubricants for more than 10 years now and have had no problems because of it. I can understand if you have a rare machine that you only use for show and parades that you might want to keep it as pure as possible, but for the vast majoirty of us that own own one or more of the thousands of the high production Fords ,Farmalls,AC's,or JD's and use and abuse them his advice is right on the money. We just need a machine that will start run and work when we need it to.

It was the featured article day or so ago. Go to the left margin under Research & Info. 1st listing is Articles and I'll bet you'll find it in there now as it has moved off center stage for today's spotlight.

Mark

(What I liked most about the article is the attempt to prise "purists" off the "the book said" position concerning what lube to use where. Again the book was published 50 yrs ago. Petroleum is no where near where it was then.)
