Improving manifold seal

I have an older skidsteer (bobcat model M600) with a wisconsin VF4 engine. This is a three part manifold system. My manifolds are pitted and wore from constant leakage of exhaust gas. My thought is to clean the surface and apply brazing to the mating surface, then flat file the surface, apply new gaskets and gasket sealer. Anyone have other suggestions or experance in improving the seal at worn, pitted cast iron joints?? By the way, the system is such that I can not remove much of the material before I will have problems with fitting the three parts back together. I would rather build up the surface and then machine it down to flat than just machine a new surface.

Thanks for any comments

What about machining the mainfold mating surface down one thickness of a manifold gasket and then re-assemble with two stacked gaskets?

Cootbruce, From your description , I think brazing will do fine , it is the next best thing to oxy/acet welding with cast iron in sticks for welding rod , arc welding would be the worst choice. I do quite a lot of repair of castings that have been arc welded and failed again , what a mess to clean up to do a good weld .

I don't know how bad your manifold is pitted but I often machine the metal surfaces to make sure they mate up. Even water pumps, etc. I think throwing that puppy on a milling machine would take care of you problew better then using fillers.

I would recommend looking at welding first. May not be an option, but as soon as you braze those outlets they will be very dificult to weld onto if it doesn"t work.

I have actually used JB weld in similar situations, and it held for as long as I needed. Your idea of brazing might be better. You may want to post this same question on the tool talk forum, lots of knowledgeable and experienced folks over there.
