A few weeks ago, I posted a question about ID'ing big round bales to curb theft. I never thought of this! Just today our local news carried the report about a local farmer here in NE SD that was continuing to lose big round bales. The county Sheriff had investigated for 5 months without uncovering any leads. The Sheriff then asked the State Game Fish and Parks Department to help...which they did. They placed Canadian Goose radio tracking collars in a few of the remaining bales. Sure enough, the bales disappeared. The state then used an airplane to track the bales (95 total) to a farm in ND. After a court appearance, the thief pleaded guilty and was charged $5000 + $800 for tracking costs. This may be the new age of farming in the 21st. century...George Orwell predictions coming true. Must work!

This is not new but any lawman can get his hands on this stuff. Here in cent ILL we had a ring of thives stealing small tractors and mowers. so finally somebody dropped them a hint ,load some up on a trailer and hook a transponder into trailer lights. guess what they had there boys in less than a week.they only stole over a million worth of equip in a couple of years. And why did this guy need 95 bales did he sell hay or was he to poor to bale his own.

I'm going to start using deer trail cameras around my place just to catch the trespassers. Plan to post photos in taverns and gas stations in the area.

Thats a big theft, but a neat idea. I've had problems every year, some is simply a questionable count. WOrse was when I was working away and had a guy managing my place for me. Neighbor saw him drving up the road with my tractor and told me. He was getting 2 round bales a day to feed his cows and putting 8 road miles a day on my tractor.

I assume collars and trackers like many hunters use on their dogs would also work, depending on the life of the collar battery.

Not sure where you are or what you have but I've bought and sold hay all over the midwest and southeast. So far my furthest load this year has been to Florida (600 miles or so). Last year sent some to Oklahoma (almost a thousand miles)

Around here hay is quite valuable. $4 for 50lb squares. Not really an abundant or short crop but price is strong.
