What tool do you use to cut the hood to replace the muffler?

NOT one of those things that John Deere is proud of.

All you have to do is remove the steering wheel, take off the grille cap, remove the steering shaft bearings, remove the steering shaft, unhook your fuel line from the sediment bowl to the carb and get about three people to help you lift off the hood. NOW you can change the muffler.

On my Farmall Super H, I loosen the clamp from the pipe that extends up from the manifold, remove the muffler, slap on the new muffler and tighten the clamps.

Sam, You do know there is a law against cutting that hood don"t you? If I"m not mistaken, the penalty for that crime is 99 years in the electric chair.

Where are you located? I hope you are in Wisconsin or the Michigan U.P. (close by) Is it a B ?
I would come and pull your hood off.
I have a cut hood off a 39 B I would put on for you in trade. I would do all the work.
Just let me drive away with the un-cut hood.

If you cut that hood you are going to regret
it.
Buck

Mine looks like it was cut with an ax. I don't know if it was cut by the former owner or a dealership. It doesn't look good.

Like the others say, take the hood off and do it right. When the dealer did it to my dad's tractor years ago, they had a cutting tool that looked like a chisel with a spur on the side. The mechanic placed the chisel on the sheet metal spur side down, and the spur cut a neat slice out of the hood. When he got thru he had a square hole in the hood slightly larger than the muffler flange. They screwed a square patch designed to cover hole, and match contours of the hood with sheet metal screws. Didn't fit well, and looked like heck. Like the others say, take the hood off and do it right. If you must cut, a tool designed to cut metal on an air chisel, or a cutting wheel on a Dremmel tool would work. Like the others say, take the hood off and do it right!

Cutting the hood is not the best way of replacing the muffler. I have a styled AW, and after looking in the books, found out that it is actually fairly easy to take the hood off. Take the steering wheel off. Then pull the steering rod out through the front of the tractor. Take out a couple of bolts, and the dash comes off. A couple more bolts, and the whole hood lifts up, gas tank and all. Don't cut the hood, as it will look terrible afterwards. A previous owner did that with this AW.

In several YEARS of hanging around here, that is the about most bizzare post I've seen, yet!

TONS of guys trying to fix their butchered hood, or find a good hood, and here's a guy that wants to ruin one!!!

Just let us know where you are at. I've got a couple of hoods around that would save you the trouble. I'd even change the hoods out myself.

To do this job with out ruining your tractor value , remove the steering rod and remove the hood. Too maney people have cut the hood open to make it easier to change the muffler.

Please, no! in reply to HaySam, 12-12-2004 10:34:17
It's not that big a job to take the hood off and do it right. And it maintains the value of the tractor. Didn't you ever see the ads that say "hood not cut"?
