Well, after 19 years in the same job,I have a new one, starting first of the year. My current boss is the owner of the place and annouced back in Sept, we would be closing due to foreign competion.Well, time has passed and we are now back at %100 for the most part and things look good for the company.I turned in my resume' at a company that has now offered me a job and I have accepted.(Guess I will have to give up Farmalls for Caterpillars)My boss is more than just my "boss".He is a very good friend and has been sorta like a father to me since my Dads passing 5 years ago.I feel very fortunate to have worked for him all these years. This is really the first "job" I have had,not counting BK,grocery store and the like. Those I just left or got fired so i dont count them as a job.So what I would like are a few suggestions on how to let him know Im leaving!

Tell him how he should feel about it or in other words tell him how you want him to feel about it. Good luck on the new job.

Sorta...Boss told me he appriciated me coming to him and all.He said he wouldnt try to talk me out of or make me feel guilty by leaving or anything like that.It went very well. Then he told me they called and checked my refernces and work record so he knew it was coming. We joked about it!

I was in a similar situation recently, and found that the flat out truth was as simple and easy as it gets. No hard feelings, etc....

You might want to consider the possibility that your long time friend might either offer a promotion or a raise to get you to stay...mine did....but I turned it down. I left my old job to make less money doing something less stressful and working less hours.

Money isn't everything and it could all be gone tommorrow so the only thing that is really worth a dime are the memories of a life well lived and the friends you make along the way.

Just something to keep in mind because usually with more $ there comes longer hours or more responsibility, etc...

Good Luck whatever route you decide to take.

Tell him the truth, man to man, face to face, and don't forget to thank him for the 19 years that the two of you were partners, so to speak.

Good luck in the new job/career, and Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Mark

John,

Like others have said: Tell him what you told us. I'm sure that he will be happy for you and no one can fault a man for bettering himself!

Also - since he's your friend - let him know of your plans early so he can plan for it - no one like surprises. Hey, I bet if the new job doesn't work out he'll want you back an will even meet the new jobs salary and benefits! Good workers are hard to find!

Best of luck and have a Merry Christmas,

Mike

Tell him what you just told us. Something I would suggest is talk to him first before you accept the new job if you have not already accepted it. Who knows, he may have a big promotion in the works for you. Forget a two week notice talk to him now.

Being truthful is the best thing. I am at my 3rd job in less than a year, but things are quite different for me. I am just starting my career. Each move I have made is better than the last. I am just a college graduate, but I am working at my dream job (I now have to switch from Oliver to Caterpillar :P). When I left each of my jobs everyone wished me the best of luck and they were very happy for me. They knew I was moving on to bigger and better things. You always have to look out for #1.

Bosses like that are few and far between. I'd say you better not leave as the new boss may be an SOB. Now if you'd of said your current boss was an SOB I'd of said leave for lunch and don't come back.

I have accually considered staying, but with the way the economy is,right now I need the extra cash, and not to mention the better benefits. My bills get paid, and I go to the doctor when i need to,but the extra cash sure would make life easier. For the most parts,my wife is the bread winner, her check in two weeks is more than mine for a month, and %80 of hers goes into saving,so the extra would come in handy.I know a few people that work for Cat now,and say its a really good job with a ot of chances for advancement!

I just posted above but had to post again. I have just begun my career at CAT. It is a great place to work and things are on the up now. There is defintely a lot of room for advancement. It is a global company and you can go anywhere you want to. That was one of the reasons I made the decision. I cannot say enough good things. Good luck with your new job.

Everyone has given you good advice. I would add, never burn your bridges - and try to give at least 2 weeks notice - they might not want you to work it but it is the right thing to do. Also turn in any keys, uniforms etc on your last day.At some point after you make the initial announcment you may need to discuss pay for unused vacation , sick days etc. so it is always wise to be as honest as possible. Also tell your boss before he hears it second hand. I did the same thing 3 years ago, left after 12 1/2 years on the same job on excellent terms due to a better opportunity, but its still hard to do. Good Luck.

When I saw the title, I expected that the boss was a son-of-a-gun and you wanted to tell him exactly what you think of him- I am glad it is not that way. My son-in-law had worked about 4 years for a real jerk. Big guy who bullied most everyone, but paid rather well. SOL went to community college and got associates degree in machine shop, got job offer (no experience yet) at $4.00 per hour more than the job he had. Told me he was going to tell Harry what he really thought of him. I told him Harry might deck him and certainly would be glad to have him gone. I suggested he tell Harry that he had a job offer that he absolutely could not refuse. Tell Harry thanks for the job opportunity. Tols him to offer to work a notice and if so, be the absolute best employee possible during that time. Harry would kick himself for long time for losing such a good employee- but my SOL would not actually get to see the regret. SOL took my advice. 4 months later, was laid off, and went to Harry who put him back to work. Two weeks later, the new employer called him back to work. When he told Harry, Harry asked him if he would work 4 hours per day while also doing the other job and SOL could choose the hours. Harry never abused him again. SOL did that for a while, saved his money and had $40K cash to put toward his new house. In my youth, I told off a boss, walked out,and he made it tough for me to get hired again. Hope this helps some young person reading this.

I was in a similar situation years ago. I left a job that I had been on for 5 years, & the owner/boss & I were good friends. We remained friends & stayed in touch. About 12 years later, the company I worked for closed, & he had sold his business several years before that. We wound up starting a business together, We are not getting rich, but we have done OK. I am glad that I left on good terms. It seems like your boss should understand, since he had warned you about the future .....

If he's like a father to you, he'll appreciate what every father knows: someday the son leaves to strike out on his own. It's every father's dread but we know in our heart of hearts it must be. Good luck.

I left a job after 10 years and had a simsilar relationship with the Boss/owner. He was a father and true friend in every way. It just was time to move on as I was starting over after a divorce and it was the best for my children for us to leave the area as their mother was a big embaresment for us. If he is what you said he is he will expect you to treat him as such with nothing but honesty. He made the first move towrd this with his honesty about maybe having to close and that is why you put in the aplication. My boss hated to see me leave as a boss but as a friend he was glad to see me move forward with my life. It was like leaving my family but we have stayed close through the years. He said it would have hurt him to find I stayed to keep from hurting him. It will be hard but honesty should not burn any bridges and if it does maybe it was not as much of a friendship as you thought. Good luck, David.

Yes, that'll be tough, but Rickstir's advice is dead-on. Be straight-up with the situation.

I have found when you tell the truth, the recipient of the news is only mad for 10 minutes. If you jerk 'em around, they're mad forever.

Best way to do it is be honest. Tell him you had concerns from the earlier announcment. You have your own future to think about. It probably was, but tell him it was the hardest thing you ever had to do. Thing is, be truthful and direct. Do it at 8:01am or whenever you start. There is an old management saying, "If you have to swallow a frog, don't look at it too long." Good luck, been there done that. If he truely has your best interest at heart, he will eventually come around.

had a guy work for me for 14 years. my top guy. never told me a thing, and called me on a sunday night that he got another job starting monday morning. that was interesting. had to reschedule lots of work, lost a few jobs because of this too. still makes me mad when i think about it. he wont come near me. [ best that way]. 2 years later another decided to leave. gave me plenty of notice. when he left, gave him extra pay and a great reference, to get started in his new job. we are still good friends. be straight, might be tough, but he will understand. nothing like being honest. make its easier for everyone. pg
